The only Generation that isn't an immediate 8 is Gen 1 - Squirtle and Bulbasaur are both extremely reliable and bags of fun without being quite as easy-mode as Mudkip.

I'd say maybe the Gen 2 starters. Cyndaquil is the most obvious choice for many players, but so is Totodile, who can be a good counter to Morty, Clair and Lance with Ice Fang as a Feraligatr. Chikorita is vastly underused as it's weak to the first two gyms, which are Flying and Bug respectively. However, I did use Chikorita in SoulSilver, now a Meganium, so Brock and Misty were a breeze.

I would say in GenI and GenIII. While in Kanto I slightly prefer Bulbasaur over the other two, I always had a slight trouble to choose the starter I wanted to go with. In GenIII, things are way worse though since it has my favourite starter trio in the series so once I got ORAS, I ended up trading wild Pokemon to get the other two starters in GTS during my playthrough.

Gen III, hands down. All starters and their evolutions have great designs and cool-looking mega forms. I favored Swampert mostly because I wanted type diversity but Blaziken and Sceptile are solid go-to pokémon for me. I've choosen Treecko on Soul Silver and I used the XY event Blaziken for my playthrough.

Unpopular opinion, but Gen 5. Serperior and Samurott both have awesome designs, in my opinion, and I like Snivy and Oshawott a lot as well. I don’t like the middle stages, and I don’t like Tepig or Emboar as much as the other two, but I still choose it from time to time because I don’t hate its design.
  7. Pikasaur

    Pikasaur The Original

I'd say Kanto is my hardest choice.

Bulbasaur is my favorite pokemon ever (tied with pikachu). I'd love to use Charmander just to see why everyone loves Charizard. But i worry about him being weak to Brock and Misty. (Doesn't stop me from using Chikorita in Johto). Blastoise and his cannons are awesome as well, but i dont want to battle the Rivals Bulbasaur usually.

Other generations, im always "Oh i'll use (this starter) this time". Kanto though is like an hour long debate in my head.

For me, it's Generation II. Totodile is easily my favorite of the three, but I think because I've hardly played those games, I've never really used any of them enough to have a clear understanding of what I want from them like I do with other generations. Also, with that trio being the only one to have no secondary types, there isn't a clear advantage over any of them.

Sinnoh, as while I don't like Infernape as much as Torterra and Empoleon, I still have fun using it. All other regions have at least one fully evolved starter I don't care for, and in Unova, I only actually like Samurott (Emboar is too slow and you can't get Contrary Serperior in-game).

My hardest choice was/is gen 7 between rowlett & popplio. I still haven't really decided which one I prefer. So far most of the other gens had been an easy choice for my first pick. I honestly have a more difficult time choosing the runner-up after the first one. For example, bulbasaur is my fav gen 1 starter but after that I am at odds between liking either squirtle or charmander more.

Gen 1 and Gen 5. I have trouble choosing between Squirtle or Bulbasaur and Snivy or Oshawott.

Gen 2 easy. I love all three, Chikorita, cyndaquil and Totodile! They're my favorite out of all the trios. Every other gen only has one (or if I'm being generous, two) starter I'd want to choose.

Oh, I think you meant what's the hardest of the trios to choose from. In most cases, I choose the Fire starter, so it's not really hard to choose.

Fifth gen is the only one I can't pick a favourite from at all. Sixth and seventh gens, too, have had hard picks, but within four earliest gens the pick has been relatively easy. After all, you can still try 'em all eventually.

Gen 3. I love Blaziken (just look at my profile) but every started in that gen is good. Not one of them stink. I always have trouble choosing between Treecko and Mudkip because they both work so well.

Gens 1 and 3: I like all three starters in both gens a lot, so picking one is always difficult.

Gens 2, 5, 6 and 7 all have two starters I like, whereas I always end up going with Turtwig in Gen 4.

I'm going to have to go with the Johto starters because that's the generation where I like them all about the same, making it harder for me to choose between them. All other generations have at least one starter that I'm far less likely to choose than the others.

Generation 4 was toughest for me to choose from. While I was never a fan of Chimchar or its evolutions, it still made the game easier. I loved Turtwig and everything it became, and was the one I chose most, but Empoleon has always been a favourite of mine.

As for the other generations, Gen 1 was tough, but I hardly ever chose Bulbasaur and pretty much alternated between the other two each play through.
In Gen 2 I always swapped between Cyndaquil and Chikorita. I never really liked Totodile (although it’s one of my favourite starters now).
As for Gen 3, it was probably one of the easiest. I wasn’t a fan of Torchic, and while Mudkip was adorable, I hated Marshtomp and Swampert design-wise. Treecko every time.
Now, Gen 5 was easy. Snivy all the way; I loved everything about it. Tepid suffered the same fate as Mudkip, and I was sick of Fire/Fighting starters. Oshawott didn’t appeal to me to start with, but now I like to use it occasionally.
I never played Gen 6, but it would be an obvious choice. Fennekin for me. Chespin was just... ew, in my opinion, and I didn’t really like the overall design of the entire chain. As for Froakie, while the concept is cool, the amount of fan-service it gets and the focus in the anime put me off from ever using it.
Finally, Generation 7. Popplio looked cute, as did the other two, but I wasn’t fond of the Fairy typing. While Litten was a nice concept, the final form didn’t appeal to me, so I used Decidueye in both Moon and Ultra.

Gen 7 for me. I was really torn during my first PT, because i liked all three starters. But in the end, the thing that pulled me over the edge was the amount of hate Popplio received compared too the other 2 and i went with Popplio. And i have no regrets, since Primarina has easily become my favorite Alola Mon and second favorite starter overall, behind Blastoise.
