what the heck?

ok so i was playing pokemon fr and i was battling a swimmer at the bottom of pallete town.I was using my electabuzz against his seadra and used thunderpunch,guess what happened next, electabuzz got poisoned from seadra's poison piont! Ok as i looked onto my guide it says that if a pokemon attacks it directly(physically) it gets the status condition and as far as i know thunderpunch is a special attack not physical. So what the heck! Is it a glitch or watever?

No, attacking directly is different than "physically". For instance, Blaze Kick, even though it's a Fire move, it still makes contact, or attacks directly, with the foe.

actually the special/physical thing doesn't matter. Think, if you were to reenact the attack would you come into contact with seadra? Yes you would. the game is programmed with this data whether it be a special attack or a physical. So next time it might behoove you to be a little more thoughtful.

It was a special attack, but it required physical contact. Some special moves reqire that like blaze kick, leaf blade, spark, elemetal punches, etc.

attack, special attack, and physical attacks are not the same.
just think of the physical attacks as an attack that makes contact with the opponent. Thunderpunch uses special attack but makes contact so it was posioned.

Basically Electabuzz's fist hit Seadra.

Think about attacks as if in real life eg 'punch'
This is not shown in the games animation. Attacks based on special types but require the body to hit...

Thunder Punch. Electabuzz punched the Seadra so it does make sence and it isn't a glitch. Same thing with any kinds of kick attacks.

You know, I never knew that. I always thought it only worked if it was a physical attack. Funny i never noticed it before

It's kinda like Hyper Beam never making contact, though it is a Physical attack.

Thats why your better off using thunderbolt than thunderpunch.
