What's so bad about natures?

Sometimes people complain about their pokemon's natures. I don't see anything wrong with them. Sure it may make certain stats not develope as quickly, but atleast the stats only raises up a little bit, not lower.

shove it up ya bum!
I can't see anything wrong with them, but I never look at what nature they have because I never check their stats.

There are a few Natures that just don't fit some Pokémon. At all. Even when not used with competitive purposes, a bad Nature will end up hindering a Pokémon.

For example, an Impish Espeon. Just no. Lowers the best Stat and raises the most useless. You're MUCH better off with ANY other Nature. Adamant Alakazam is another good example...

For in-game, all's OK as long as they're not mega-horrid Natures, like the ones I mentioned above. Low Speed Natures are also awful for the most part, save a few exceptions.

If you're not into making good Pokémon, Natures should be rather superfluous. Still, it's better to struggle for at least a Neutral one, instead of being stuck with an awful one for a given Pokémon...

Wait, no.... natures do not lower stats. When ever I level up a Pokemon, there are a few or one stat that is the lowestest, but on the stat up screen it shows a +, thus that stat is still lowering. It takes alot of time, but it's worth it in the end.

Much like EVs, Nature's influence in Stats isn't evident until you reach very high Levels. And when it comes to battles in Battle Frontier, Trainer Tower or Link Battles, Natures are a HUGE determiner of the outcome. Having a GODAWFUL Nature will always be bad. Always. I can tell you that by experience.

No need to struggle with in-game Pokémon. But if you want to use one competitively, Natures are vital...

Yes, they do. Each nature (aside from the neutrals, which can still be thought of as raising/lowering the same stats) raises one stat and lowers another. See the main site. (http://www.serebii.net/games/natures.shtml) This is MULTIPLICATIVE, and the last calculation done to a stat, so if a stat is hindered by a nature, it will NEVER reach its full potential. For instance, an Adamant Mewtwo's Special Attack can never be higher than 366, while a Modest one's can get as high as 447. This is why we call some natures bad. It also depends entirely on the Pokémon and its moveset.

Edit: Beaten ..grr.. at least I put thought and time into my post.

PROVE that natures lower stats.

And... what are EVs?

Edit: .......So how come I never notice any stats lowering. In my Leafgreen, my Squirtle is QUIRKY. And my Pikachu is Native. That good?

I don't know GBA assembly. Sorry. You'll have to ask tvsian or someone who's disassembled the game.

It's easier to demonstrate, though. Catch a bunch of wild Pokémon at the same level. Pick a stat you want to take a look at. Say, defense. Use the natures table in the link I posted and divide them into groups: Raised, lowered, left alone. You'll see that, indeed, the ones in the "raised" group have the stat you're looking at higher than those in the other two groups. Likewise, those in the "lowered" group have the stat you grouped them by as lower.

Jeez, I don't know why I put ANY time and effort into posts for people who clearly don't want our advice. -.-

You're still not understanding.

The stats don't go DOWN, ie, you won't ever see a -5 or whatever when your Pokemon levels up. But for example, a Pokemon with a Nature that lowers Attack will have 10% less attack than a Pokemon that does NOT have a Nature that lowers Attack. You don't want an Attack-lowering Nature on a Pokemon that NEEDS Attack, like Snorlax. It wants a Nature that lowers Sp. Attack, since it isn't going to use that stat anyway.

Ah good. I can handle the lowering of Speical defense for Pikachu, and the raising of Speed will be perfect.

And nothing happens to Quircky Pokemon.

Hey, thanks.

I lack TRJessie's 00ber newbie-handling skills. Me and Orion were talking, to put it simply, in relation to the average of the species for a given level. A poke's nature will make one stat larger and another smaller.

So stats never lower, just take longer to raise?

Stats never decrease as you raise a Pokémon. (level's also multiplicative) I'm still a little shocked that that's what you thought we meant. o_0

Really? Oh yay! *dances with my feet*

You know... offtopic but... Serebii.net's pokedex should include nature suggestions for each pokemon. Will make things easier for me and many others.

oh, i'd say a brave alakazam was worse...
i saw my mate had one of those, and i had to tell her to breed for a better nature.

speed hindering natures aren't that bad - a lot of decent pokes are pretty slow anyway, so if you don't have the patience to breed for, say, an adamant geodude, a brave one will work equally well.

If you really need help with your team, we have an in-game team rate sub-forum here.

Natures that are good for a pokemon usually depend on their moveset so you can get a slight idea.

Try the "pokemon of the week" section... the link is right above the forum link on the main page.
And no... stats don't lower, the correct phraising is "the stats are lower than what they could be with a nuetral or beneficial nature.
for each pokemon, there's prolly about 4 different natures that could make a pokemon unusable and those would be natures that lower the stat that a pokemon would need most like, say, a defense oriented water pokemon would be horrible if its special defense stat was hindered. Since Water is weak to electric and grass, both special attack types, low special defense would cause a quick acting pokemon of either type to easily defeat it. Even in-game it could be a bad thing, since the A.I. doesn't always take advantage of those things.
