Whats the border line for violence?

When is violence in a series considered an R instead of PG-13. Like, what would make it R and not PG-13. Could you give me some specifics here? I was just curious about when violence is too much.

My fic, The Deadliest Tournament has several fine examples where just one violent scene makes it qualified for the R rate.

Here is a fine example of an R rated violent scene:

As the trio sat in their chairs, facing Giovanni’s desk, their eyes were drawn to a small Rattata poking its head out of a tiny hole along the floor of the wall they were facing. Cautiously, the small, purple, rat-like Pokémon crept out of the hole, its nose to the ground. Unfortunately and unbeknownst to the Rattata, Persian had already seen it. She walked over to the Rattata stealthily, her paws making not a single noise. The Rattata still unaware, the Persian suddenly reached down with her maw open and grabbed the rat in her jaws. The Rattata let out a single, continuous, high pitched squeal as it was trapped within Persian’s maw, the large cat’s fangs digging into the rat’s side and drawing small streams of blood. Growling, Persian tipped her head up at Giovanni who looked down at her, his current conversation being interrupted, the rat being offered up to him.

“I have no need for anymore rats, especially after the trouble this Pikachu has caused us. Go ahead and rid the world of it; I’m sure you’re hungry by now.” Giovanni said, turning back around in his chair to face the trio, whose eyes were locked on the Persian and its prey with a morbid curiosity. Giovanni decided to keep quiet and enjoy what he saw a little entertainment.

Persian lowered her head to the floor and opened her maw; the Rattata scurrying away from the Persian, thinking it was being let free. A snide smirk grew across the Persian’s face as she began to purr, her eyes watching the Rattata’s every move. The rat had almost made it back to the hole in the wall when Persian struck, taking a large leap, her right forepaw ahead of her with its claws extended, glistening in the artificial light. At the last second the Rattata looked up, promptly collapsing to the ground as it saw the Persian drop down on top of it, her right forepaw raking across the rat’s back, rending flesh and sending blood spraying. The rat screamed out in pain and agony; however Persian mercilessly ignored its pleas. Drawing her paw back again she took another swipe at the rat’s back, and another, and another. Each time blood spurted out from the claw wounds on the Rattata’s back like a fountain as it squealed in pain ever louder. At last its back was completely bare of any flesh; crimson colored meat exposed to the world. The rat panted as it lay sprawled out on the floor in a puddle of its own blood, its breaths becoming harder as time and Persian’s playful torture of it went on.

Baring her fangs, Persian growled before bending down and sinking her fangs into the Rattata’s back. Savagely she twisted her head, tearing away a good chunk of meat and exposing part of the rat’s spine, which had been fractured from the Persian’s initial attack. Hungrily she tossed the chunk of meat down her throat, licking her lips at the taste before biting into the rat again, tearing away most of what remained of the rat’s back. All the rat could do now was wheeze painfully as the puddle of blood grew ever larger while the Persian tore it apart. Even if the Persian were to stop now the rat’s life would be over in a mater of minutes; however, she had no intention of doing so and closed her jaws around the rat’s now easily visible spine and ribs, biting hard and turning the bones to fragments. The spine and ribs mostly gone, Persian pushed what was left of them out of the way, exposing the Rattata’s guts and organs. Ravenously Persian grabbed a large mass of the Rattata’s guts in its maw, holding her meal down with a paw as she gave the guts a tug, snapping them free of the rest of the body. The Rattata gave one final gasp for breath as it watched the Persian gulp down its own insides, before closing its eyes for the final time.

Her prey dead and eviscerated, Persian swiped at the carcass’ neck with a claw, severing the head from the body. Picking up the rat’s head she bit down on it, cracking it like an egg and spilling out the gray brain matter inside. After wolfing down the fractured head she bent down and licked up the brain matter before turning her attention back to the rest of the carcass. Persian’s meal almost complete she quickly tore chunks of meat off the carcass as she ate what had used to be just a curious Rattata in a bloody mess. At last, only the tail remained of the Rattata, however Persian had no intention of leaving a single remnant behind. She picked the floppy tail up in her jaws and slurped it down her throat like a noodle, savoring its taste; her meal now finished. The Rattata had now been completely devoured; all that remained of it was the large puddle of blood that covered the ground and was splattered over the office walls and furniture.

“That is what will happen to you three if you fail me in this mission. Do I make myself clear?” Giovanni coldly asked to the now pale trio of incompetent buffoons.

They only nodded as they got back to the subject before the little recent incident with the purple rat.

As you can see, the simple concept of a cat eating a rat was fully described. Every fine detail of the demise of the rat's body was put in. Not only that though, but it was made more like the cat was doing playful murder rather than eating it for food.

That is basically the main concept with R rated violence. It is so deeply described, only a limited amount of readers can actually handle it, without recieving too much psychologic damage to the brain.

Here is something more on the line of PG-13:

The evil leviathan came rushing through the area and, with one quick slash, cut right trough all three necks, dislodging the heads from the body, thus delivering the final blow.

Now, this was highly described, but if I went further and put in the vital fluid of life being spilled, it would just barely make R.

As you can see, both description and blood play a BIG role in pulling off the R rate. It takes both to get that R, and only one can get you PG-13.

So remember the simple formula:

Gore like blood or deep description = PG-13

Gore like blood + deep description = R

Hope this helps. :)

BTW, I wrote that Persian eating the Rattata thing, remember ;) Was quite fun...

Basically, if you describe the violence in so much detail that you can explicitly imagine what’s going on in your head without any need to fill in details yourself, that’s R.

If the description is sort of fuzzy and doesn’t fully describe the scene, leaving stuff to the imagination or just barely mentioning certain details, then it’s most likely PG-13. Here’s an example of PG-13 writing from my fic:

“Sol!” Matariel came running out from behind me and leapt at one of the soldiers, raking her claws across his chest and tearing at his throat with her fangs. Blood splattered the hallway as Matariel tore his chest open and he collapsed to the ground, guts spilling out of his bloody chest as his neck gave a sharp crack.

Another thing to keep in mind is that since R is more descriptive with gore and all that, scenes such as that in R rated fics tend to be longer, although not necessarily always as long as that whole Rattata thing :D

If you’re ever in doubt, just contact one of the mods first.
