What should have been Ash’s last series?

  • He should have been written off after Kanto/Orange Islands

  • They should have dumped him when the show moved to Advance

  • Diamond and Pearl should have been his last series. He regressed after that

To this day I still wonder why the writers are afraid to take that chance, to move on from Ash and have a new protagonist like many other anime's of the genre, sure it keeps the pokemon anime unique in the fact that he and Pikachu won't go, but as time goes on he gets more stale, regardless of the pokemon he gets or how competent he is at combat.
