When you surfed, did you encounter about 60 Tentacools before getting back on land?

Yes.
And people wonder why they're virtually nonexistent in Gen V.

No they don't. They're no existent because there aren't any previous Gen Pokemon until you get the National Dex.

No, I use Max Repels. But my friend was playing Sapphire and on the FIRST ENCOUNTER between Lilycove and Mossdeep, he came across a shiny tentacool and caught it. Lucky son of a ...........

Because I'm Worth It
All the time, but it gets annoying after a while, which is why I love repels.

Oh god! Tentacool are just plain pests! Life would be much easier and my game time lower without them. It was great in R/B/Y when you never (well, rarely) came across any Pokémon whatsoever when surfing.

As annoying as bug pokemons in the grass in the beginning of the game.

Max Repel ftw.

Why yes, it exists
Actually, the first time I ever surfed, it was on a friend's copy of Sapphire. It was on route 129-131, iirc, and the guy had no repels or anything in his bag. So between Ever Grande City and Pacifidlog Town, I encountered approximately 23 Tentacools, a Wingull, another 13 Tentacools, a Pelipper, and a Tentacruel just to round things out.

One word, Repels.

... And there's the time when I was cheap in Pokémon and never bought any. *shivers*

Yeah, but not exclusively in the third generation, of course. I really hate it when I run into a Tentacruel and it won't let me run. Of course, in that first turn they always end up poisoning me. -_-

The sad thing is, the number 60 is actually pretty accurate...

This is exactly why I use repels. The third gen beat it into me so much I'm having trouble breaking the habit in the more recent Gens. No...more...tentacool......thank you nintendo.

Every Weekend....
Like almost every person who has responded before me has said, you need repels. However, sometimes you run into a Tentacruel, which could be good sometimes. Sometimes when you hit "run", it says that you can't. Then you have to wait 4+ hours for it to use bind 200 time and then it lets you go.

"Traveling can be Hell, if you don't have Repel!"
