What is your opinion of ORAS as a whole? How much do you like the game? Where do you rank ORAS, compared to the rest of main Pokémon games? Do you think it's one of the best Pokemon games ever? Or were you disappointed?

Personally, I think ORAS is the second best Pokemon game sofar (only behind BW2), tied with Emerald and HGSS, which share the second position with ORAS.

So, in my opinion:
1. BW2
2. ORAS
2. Emerald
3. HGSS

With each gen building and adding onto the generation before, ORAS sure offers a good bit of fun, activities, games, side quests, and Pokemon. I recently went back and found my copy of Blue, Silver, Crystal, and Ruby/Sapphire. Playing Blue, then Gen 2 - I did not notice much difference as I was not into breeding back then. So, for me, it was seeing the jump from Gen 1 to 3. And wow... Amazing! And elegant.

I never played Gen 4 or 5, but I picked up a HG recently and - to me - it feels like there is not much difference between Gen 3 and 4. Just new pokes and a slower leveling up grind in HGSS. Someone said on here that Platinum is the best Gen 4 game. I hope it sets Gen 4 apart from Gens 3 & 5 - want to try Platinum for this reason. Then, just two weeks ago, I got a copy of White. Powered on the 3DS and was waaaay underwhelmed. And went back to ORAS.

So, for me, Gen 6 is the best. Followed by Gen 3 & 4. I am on the hunt for Emerald, Fire Red, and Leaf Green to complete my Gen 3 collection.

I have gone with one of the Top 3. I was hard on the games at first but now I can see how good they are.

Top 3 games:
1. BW2
2. ORAS/Emerald
3. HGSS/Platinum

I tried to pick one from each gen but found it difficult. BW2 was easy to pick as number one. Couldn't pick ORAS without picking Emerald. Same applies to Platinum and HGSS.

It wasa good game, they found reasonably interesting ways to cram all the legendaries into it, the delta episode was less predictable than most of the maib series plotlines and the new megas werew more competitively balanced (besides P-Groudon and mega rayquaza but I don't play ubers so I don't mid that as much. Also Dex NAv was great, it made it possible to earn HA pokemon through persistance and made it feel like pokemon were always part of the environment. However I don't think ORAS improved on the original as much as the other remakes. The lack of a proper battle frontier and trainer customisation was disappointing too. I think practically every main-series game has improved on the last one in many ways, but this one wasn't that big a step-up from XY compared to. say, RSE to GSC.

I think they're slightly better than Black/White and X/Y, but worse than Hg/Ss and B2/W2. I wish that Or/As had more post game content than just Delta Episode and the Battle Resort cuz the former wasn't long enough to me and the latter involves battling, which isn't my main interest when I play the games. ^^;

For me personally its in the middle. I actually like this game alot but it isn't one of my personal favorites.

I think they're one of the weaker games in the series. It's a remake, so it wasn't anything I hadn't seen before other than the Primal Reversion that wasn't in the main game. It might be because I didn't like the original Hoenn games that much, but ORAS didn't seem all that great. I was hyped for them, sure, but so was everyone else around me so their hype rubbed off on me. They felt super easy too, which I wasn't a particular fan of. Compared to other main series games, these would be low on the totem pole.

I think they are pretty good. They are not as good as B/W, B2/W2 and X/Y, but better than everything else. So they are my 4th favorites in the series overall. I like the games, but at the same time, they are missing a lot of things that could have made them much better. The top four things I am missing are a larger regional Pokedex, Battle Facilities that differ from what X/Y had, a larger post-game and more content in general. Then they are remakes which drags them down a bit for me as I prefer first pairs, third versions and sequels over remakes. A large amount of the things they had to offer were things I had already experienced in X/Y and R/S/E, so they didn't impress me that much in terms of features and content.

That said, they have a lot of good points, and the good outweighs the bad for me. I liked the story and characters, the new features in general and the new Mega Evolutions. I wouldn't say they are the best games ever, but they are still good and far from the worst. I was initially very uninterested in them and didn't get them when they were released (and I would likely not have gotten them yet if we had gotten a new main series game last year). I did get them later on in order to have something to do until we get Sun/Moon. In terms of remakes, I find them to not be as good as FR/LG (though they are better in terms of games) but they are much better than HG/SS. To summarize, I think OR/AS are good games, but only average remakes.

To elaborate about my opinion of ORAS, I think the game is one of the best sofar. Either second best, or third best.

ORAS does have some issues, like no gym leader rematches, and no Battle Frontier, but in total, I think most of the criticism towards the game, comes from the fact that people wrongfully take ORAS as a flawed and inaccurate RSE remake, when, in reality, ORAS is a fantastic RS remake. It's not meant to be an Emerald remake. Once people start seeing it as a RS remake exclusively, they will really appreciate the game more.

I think ORAS is one of the games with the most content, thanks to Battle Resort, Food Court, Contests, Super Secret Bases (that become pseudo Gyms), Pokemon Amie, Super Training, DexNav, Trainer's Eye, Soaring, etc. It definitely has more content than all other Pokemon games except maybe two or three other ones.

Also, story is one of the best in the franchise, only behind BW, in my opinion. It is a lot better than the plot of the original RSE, and it is even stronger in the post game, with the Delta Episode.

So, since the game is one if the 3-4 games with the most content, the second best plot wise, and the absolute n1 gameplay wise (flying to routes, turbo surfing, Pokenav Plus, etc), I think it is logical to call ORAS one of the 2 or 3 best Pokemon games sofar.

I went with somewhere in the middle.

My top 3 would be:
1. Platinum
2. Soul Silver

I am surprised to see many votes for 'somewhere in the middle" or lower. I think the game is in the Top 3 sofar.

Even though I'm actually really enjoying my current playthrough, ORAS is one of my least favourite games. The main reason for that is that I was never a big fan of Gen III to begin with and these games are basically a exact copy of that only with better graphics. I just remember Gen III being a huge disappointment for me after GS, which are my absolute favourite games of the series.

I loved, loved, loved the originals. There was not a minute of enjoyment in the remakes for me. After my second time through, I decided to replay Emerald and Emerald is everything these remakes are not.
ORAS opponent teams are barren. There are no gym leader rematches and there is no new battling facility. There is no way to battle Brendan/May after the final battle. Essentially, there is no point to training Pokémon for the meta game. If you are interested in competitive battling, you can easily EV train and level up, but with literally no change or novelty compared to XY.
The Delta Episode was new story, but it cost us the Sky Pillar puzzle which was one of the most memorable Pokémon hunts for me.
I don't know if anyone else will agree with this, but I thought these games were particularly ugly. The Pokémon models were not new. The style of the current game engine and that of the Game Boy Advance did not come together. Many times my eyes felt sore.
Everything that Emerald added to the Aqua/Magma story line was discarded. So to have Aqua or Magma felt like half a story to anyone who played the Emerald story.
Gone is the Poké Block game, Game Corner, the safari aspect of the Safari Zone, the quest to catch Lati@s, with nothing to replace them. No new areas other than Soaring spots, which are not as fleshed out as the Sevii Islands or updated Kanto and Johto. A remake should have more, not less.

That's because ORAS are not Emerald remakes. They are Ruby/Sapphire only, with some extra Emerald enhancements here and there. They are not meant to be like Emerald remakes, though so you shouldn't judge them as what they are not meant to be.

ORAS opponent teams are barren. There are no gym leader rematches and there is no new battling facility. There is no way to battle Brendan/May after the final battle. Essentially, there is no point to training Pokémon for the meta game. Ok, just some thoughts on your points:

1. I think the reason why there are no gym leader rematches in ORAS, is because you can actually BE A GYM LEADER IN ORAS. And it is the only game sofar, where you can create your own gym, set your own rules and also battle other real life gym leaders as well, by downloading up to 30 Bases with their own Gym Leaders and grunts. I think those, are meant to be the Gym Leader rematches of this game, and that's why "normal gym leader rematches" are not in the game.

And besides, we also have the Battle Resort type masters, which are basically just like normal gym leaders and could be countes as a direct substitute of those. And on top of that, we can face Gym Leader Wallace in Contests, so that's one gym leader we can actually rematch.

2. True, there is no new Battle facility in ORAS. But there was no new battle facility in HGSS either, as they just copy pasted the Platinum Battle Frontier, with no additions whatsoever. In fact, in HGSS, they didn't even bother to change the Multi Battle partners and you can only team up with the same Multi Battle partners from Platinum, which makes no sense at all. In ORAS, at least they bothered to give us new Multi Battle Partners: it's the first time ever where you can have a Villain Boss (Archie and Maxie) as a partner in a facility. It is also the first time you can have the Champion (Steve) as a partner in a facility. And we got brilliant remixes of the Battle Frontier overworld and Battle music!

3. You say there is no way to rematch Brendan/May after the final battle, but you couldn't rematch them in RSE either, if I remember correctly, am I correct?

But instead of rematching Brendan/May, in the postgame you can have them as Multi Battle partners in the Battle Maison Multi Battles. So you can still battle *with* them in ORAS and therefore they continue to be relevant after the main game. In RSE, they had absolutely no role in the postgame (correct me if Im wrong).

Also, you can rematch Wally, now in a challenging battle, unlike RSE. And now he is around lvl 80, and is the strongest in- game battle in the series.

Also, ORAS did change the Metagame, by adding 20 brand new Mega, and 2 brand new Primal Pokemon. In fact, it is the only remake to shake up the Meta Game, since HGSS and FRLG added ZERO new Pokemon.

The Delta Episode was new story, but it cost us the Sky Pillar puzzle which was one of the most memorable Pokémon hunts for me.
It didn't really cost us anything. The Sky Pillar looks majestic now, unlike in the original RSE, where it was just annoying. Also, as a side note, the Emerald theme when Rayquaza descends from the sky, is used in the Sky Pillar in ORAS, whereas in RSE, it just reused Chimney's track. So that's an other improvement from the originals.

Whaaat!? ORAS is the best looking game sofar, and the Gen VI engine was beautifully blended with the GBA graphics style, imo.
And the Poke models were reused from XY, of course. Because 3D Pokemon models are meant to be reused. They are not like sprites, where you can modify them constantly.

About the story: I played Emerald many times (in fact, only Emerald, never the original RS) and ORAS doesn't feel like half a story to me at all. Just that your version Villain Team overcomes the opposite one, whereas in Emerald, they were tied. No big deal.

Also, story elements like the Villain Team taking over the Mossdeep Center, was Emerald exclusive, and it also happens in ORAS, during the Delta Episode.

Also:

- they probably saw the Pokeblock manking minigame as something that most of the new players these days would find enraging, and that's why it was simplified. It was replaced with a simpler process of pokeblock making.

- The Game Corner was closed due to the new anti gambling laws in Europe and the US. I am not sure, but I wouldn't be surprised if the anti gambling laws have reached Japan as well, not sure. So the kinda had to close the Game Corner. The other option was to have that Voltorb minigame like in HGSS, instead of the gambling games. Besides, the main prizes of the Casino were some cool TMs and the starter dolls. Since the TMs are now reusable, and the owner gives you the 3 starter dolls for free, there isn't much reason to have the Casino, don't you think? I will agree that we didn't get a substitute for the Casino, which is annoying, but we do have new minigames now (the Amie and Super Training minigames), don't you count those?

- the Lati@s quest does recieve a substitute. We get a new extra sidequest, and go to South Island to save Lati@s from Team Aqua/Magma. Less enraging and more entertaining imo.

How are we not getting a substitute for the Safari Zone minigame? DexNav says hi. It is a minigame of approaching the Pokemon, and occurs around the entire game, rather than be limited to the Safari Zone only. Therefore it is much bigger and better.

About new areas: you can't really expect a massive region like Hoenn, to add something like the Sevii Islands. Kanto needed it, because it is so small, but Hoenn is huge. And yet, we did get 38 new Mirage Spot Islands, 3 Secret Base Islands, 2 or 3 new underwater routes (with trainers underwater, something that RSE lacked) and of Course, Mauville City is now much much bigger.

To summarize, I think nostalgia is kinda distorting your perception of ORAS, but you can have your opinion, of course...

I did not say they are Emerald remakes, I said that Emerald has features that are missed in ORAS, and Emerald predates ORAS by a good 9 years.
Being a gym leader is nice, sure, once you figure out bases, QR codes, wait a day, get the level release, and all these additional pains. Gym leader rematches are a pretty standard feature for the Pokémon games and I missed them. The Battle Resort masters are not gym leaders and facing a leader in a contest is not a battle rematch by any stretch of the imagination. I spent a good amount of time in the contests this time around, really just not comparable to battling.
In HGSS, the Battle Frontier was new compared to the original GS. The Maision exists where the Tower was.
True that you could not rematch May/Brendan in the originals, it was just a small improvement I looked for and did not find. Rebattling Wally exists in the originals and someone has to be the strongest in the games.
New Megas and the primal reversion are just a variance on originally placed Pokémon. A change in the meta game? Yes, I will agree, but I wouldn't say it completely shook up the meta game seeing as you use one per battle and again the rosters were barren.
I had no reason to spend time in the Delta Pillar without the puzzle, you feel free to count that as an improent, but I consider it a loss. The music was good, but with access to the original music and no equivalent to the GS Sounds or whatever they were called, I'm not going to count it an improved feature.
We disagree on the style. I think the color palette of RS clashed with the Gen Vi engine. There were aesthetically pleasing moments, like the Cave of Origin, but as a whole, the recycled spots felt like an eye sore.
Debating a need for updating sprites or models is moot, the models, other than new megas and primals offered nothing new. So that's at best one team member per an at best six spot team.
Having played Emerald, I felt like I missed the chance to battle Magma in AS.
They could have made the PokéBlock game optional instead of completely remove it. It was something to do.
Removing the Game Corner was a good choice because of the AntiGambling laws. The change in TMs though would not defeat its purpose as another side quest. Super Training and Poké Amie are these things but they were just in XY, Voltorb Flip was already two generations ago, and a game corner three.
With all the legendary Pokémon, there was no roamer. Lati@s is given to you, you do not have to battle it or encounter it any number of times. I remember running all over Hoenn looking for Latias, however frustrating it was, it felt missed.
Your coment on the DexNav says hi made me laugh. I remember having to solve the bike puzzles with limited steps and using Sweet Scent just to get an encounter with a Pokémon like Pinsir, but it's good to know that the DexNav says hi. The DexNav fell to the shadows being released right after breeding made it easy to get 5IVs and egg moves. I did like the DexNav, but it is not some augmentation to the Safari Zone.
38 Mirage Spots could easily be one area like the Battle Resort thing in DP, it felt like one new area divided into 38 parts. A spot with at best like 5 Pokémon species and at best a TM just reeked of disapointment for me. You say Hoenn is massive, but it didn't really seem massive, it felt like a Kanto, Johto, or any other region with enough for 8 gym towns and some extra spots. I didn't feel like I travled any where new in what I always considered a highly diverse region.
TL;DR: These games felt like an obligatory installation to the series. Nostalgia is just one of many reasons that these games fall short of their potential as remakes, Pokémon games, and just games in general.
To someone who is new to Pokémon, I'm sure ORAS seem great, but they seemed static compared to the evolving series, which is what this specific thread discusses.

To someone who is new to Pokémon, I'm sure ORAS seem great, but they seemed static compared to the evolving series, which is what this specific thread discusses.

Almost all of your complaints seem more like personal nitpicks that you have with ORAS, not objective problems with the game.

1. Even though you recognize that ORAS is not meant to be an Emerald remake, you still criticize it for not having Emerald content in it. bThat would be like to criticize a future BW1 remake, for not including the PWT, a BW2 feature that shouldn't be expected in a BW1 remake! Makes no sense.

2. I missed standard Gym Leader rematches in ORAS as well. But instead, we got an objectively better substitute instead: Super Secret Gym Rematches. We have up to 30 Secret Gym Leaders, all available for daily rematches, whereas in most games, you only get 3 Gym Leader rematches per day. So, we basically just got a non- standard version of the same feature.

3. In HGSS, the Battle Frontier was new compared to GS, just like IN ORAS the Battle Resort feels new compared to RS.
4. In RSE you couldn't rematch Brendan/May after the main game, and you couldn't do ANYTHING AT ALL with them, during the postgame, while in ORAS, you team up with them in the Battle Maison, so, even if you don't fight them, you still get to fight WITH them, so it is still a notable improvement from the originals.

5. Rebattling Wally is the toughest in- game battle in the entire series. The strongest battle in RSE was against Steven in Meteor Falls (and it was a one time thing, you couldn't rebattle him ever after). In ORAS, Champion Steven has higher level Pokemon in his post gane team than Emerald Steven. And Wally has an even stronger Team than Champion Steven.
Also, ORAS has Pokemon League upgraded rematches while RSE don't.

6. ORAS adding 20 new Megas and 2 Primals, is more than any other Pokemon game has EVER added in the middle of its geeration: Yellow, Cristl, FRLG, Emerald and HGSS all added absolutely NO new Pokemon formes, therefore not shaking up the metagame AT ALL. Platinum added Giratina only. BW2 added around 5 new formes. ORAS adds 22. And yet you call ORAS static, when it is easily the least static of all those versions xD

- The Sky Pillar is absolutely awesome in ORAS. Again, you can dislike the removal of the bike puzzle, but this is more of a personal nitpick and doesn't make ORAS worse or anything. Not everybody likes getting annoyed by a bike puzzle.

- The GB Sounds item was a cool HGSS exclusive. Expecting to have that in ORAS, is like expecting to Soar on the back of a Latios in HGSS. Let every game have it's own exclusive stuff xD

- Having played Emerald, I didn't want to fight both Villain Teams.

- I agree that they could have left the Berry minigame if someone preferred to make pokeblocks that way, but they probably found it redundant (which it is tbh)

- Yeah, considering we didn;t get any form of a Casino in BW, BW2 or XY, it kinda made sense they would not bring it back in ORAS. And yes, Voltorb Flip hasn't been used longer, but Amie and Super Training mini games are objectively better (at least in number)

- As you said, the RSE Lati chase was annoying and frustrating. And Game Freak are actively trying to make Pokemon games less frustrating and more pleasant, I am glad the Latis go

had a side plot in ORAS, rather than a pointless hunt.

- There is nothing funny about my comment on the DexNav. Safari Zone is meant to give you foreign to Hoenn Pokemon. The DexNav does just that, only 100 times better, and around the entire region. It is the obvious equivalent of the classic Safari Zone minigame, so it is funny how you said the SZ had no substitute LOL The DexNav is a much bigger version of the same feature.

- OK, then. You can count the 38 mirage spots as one huge, new area divided in 38 parts. That's still a lot, objectively. The DP Battle Zone island is big.

You can't call ORAS static when it is objectively less static and more innovative compared to past remakes, and third versions. You could just say you personally don't like it instead.

Not sure about replayability but my first playthrough was my favourite by far. Such great music and they improve everything in a good way from the original.
