Where do you rate this amongst the rest of the series?

My list would go something like this:

1.) Gold/Silver/Crystal
2.) Fire Red/Leaf Green
3.) Red/Blue/Yellow
4.) Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald

I don't know why, but I could never really get into the 3rd generation, something about the Hoenn Pokemon just didn't feel right.

fire red/leaf green

I can't stand the red/blue
remake for what ever reason.

4.) Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald

The original 3rd Gen games made little or no use of the GBA's potential. Fire Red/ Leaf Green were a blessing.

2.) FR/LG - Love the VS. Seeker
3.) R/S/E - It's been years since I played any of the games, and my memory of it is very dim. But I do plan on getting Emerald sometime soon.
4.) R/B/Y - Classic and great, but dynamics take over my interest with the new games.

I've found this is a general consensus amongst most long-time Pokemon fans, it just did -so- much for the series, including but not limited to:

Added the breeding system
Added the friendship system
Added night/day shifts
Added a ton of new Pokemon and the most gyms of any game ( 16 ).
It allowed you to travel through and play in both regions.
Added new and in my opinion the best evolutions of Eevee

I could go on for days, but you get the idea, basically everything thats good about the current generations and D/P started there. I still miss some of the Pokemon too, like Typhlosion, Lugia, Ampharos, etc.

In my not-at-all-humble opinion:

1.) Gold/Silver/Crystal. As stated above, these games are the best Pokemon generation ever. The only games that look like they could even contend for this #1 spot are Diamond and Pearl...and even then, they don't have 16 gym badges to collect. Gold/Silver/Crystal = Pure Ownage.

2.) FireRed/LeafGreen. Remakes of the original greatness that started this all. Because they add so much new content (Vs. Seeker is love) on top of the original fantastic quest, they get the #2 spot instead of the originals.

3.) Red/Blue/Yellow. Ah, the games that started my love affair with Pokemon. How could I ever forget you? While you will always have a place in my heart...your offspring just did things better. Well, with the exception of #4.

4.) Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald. I'll just say it, I really didn't care for these games at all. After the flawless G/S/C games, this was just a slap in my face. You take away all the time based events and replace them with...a Pokemon fashion contest. Great (feel the sarcasm dripping from that word). Oh, and now we have natures, which just makes catching Pokemon with decent stats a royal pain in my posterior. Yes, I liked some of the new Hoenn Pokemon. No, this didn't make up for the rest of the game being a shell of the previous generation.

Thankfully the future of Pokemon looks bright. Diamond and Pearl seem like they will either be the best of the series, or at least second place, when they are released next week. So exciting...

I really don't know much about D/P aside from what Pokemon it will feature, is there anywhere on this site or somewhere else that I can get a definitive low down about all its features?

PS: I played R/S through once and it was enough. I recently tried to play them through again and well, I made it to Mauville before I started to crack.

Gold Silver and Crystal were the best for the one reason u had 16 badges to collect. That was the true greatness of the game. I thoroughly enjoyed going through Gold and Silver. The amount of times i fought Red...Man that was plenty. Strongest trainer still on any game. I beat him with Lv 65's and I got Tyranitar to Lv 88 (my personal highest without cheating). My team was awesome aswell after i dropped Meganium

Then I would put in Ruby and Saphhire. For me, it was a small step backwards from the G/S/C days. But with the additions of natures and contests, i found a whole new section to the game. Although, it proved troublesome to train for me. On Gold, i could quite happily sit for hours training...On Sapphire, it jst didnt feel the same.

Fire Red and Leaf Green. I have only played these on an emulator, but was good fun they were. VS Seeker FTW! What a brilliant tool that was Top of Cycling road was the best place to use it (8 trainers at once IIRC)

R/B/Y The originals come last on my list im afriad. Yes i played them to death, I glitched to hell...I had an awesome team. But after i beat the game...There wasnt really a lot to do...I had pretty much completed the Dex before id gotten to the Elite 4, the Only Pokemon i was missing was Flareon...

1)GSC for great 2D graphics, great gameplay, great storyline, great sound/music, and great pokemon
2) RBY for just plain original stuff and great storyline
3) RSE for great pokemon, great storyline, and great side quests
4) FR LG for everything I said about RBY and for great new features like Sevii Islands, Union room, and jhoto pokemon.
