It's very evident that Sonic is influenced by Dragon Ball. Mainly; the 7 chaos emeralds that everyone is always looking to collect. However, did they influence each other? My friend is saying that the "golden" Super form of Sonic was debuted in the early 90s (92 or before). Was the SSJ already introduced when this happened, or did Dragonball choose to take something from Sonic's book to get even?

I believe it was DBZ first--the Dragonball series debuted in the...late 1980s I believe, maybe a bit earlier.

Nothing to be done
The creator of Sonic the Hedgehog has admitted to being a Dragonball fan, and that Super Sonic was is indeed a parody of a Super Saiyan. The seven Chaos Emeralds are also his tribute to the dragonballs.

Super Saiyan came before Super Sonic. Super Sonic is pretty much based off Super Saiyan. HOWEVER, Super Saiyan isn't actually "original," seeing as Toriyama used another old folk-tale in terms of a "Gold Warrior" similar to the Super Saiyan form..only a few differences here and there. >_>

To be exact Sonic The Hedgehog 2 which was the first game with Super Sonic in for the Megsdrive/Genesis was released in 21/11/92 but i'm not sure about Super Saiyan, I'm guessing it was before that though.

Anywho, yes, Super Saiyan did come before Super Sonic. Son Goku's Super Saiyan transformation appeared in the Dragon Ball manga in Japan around 1990/1991. The anime version of the chapter occured in Dragon Ball Z episode 95, which aired on June 12, 1991 in Japan.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2, which featured the debut of Super Sonic, was first released in Japan on November 21, 1992, which was then followed with a US release only a few days later (November 24, 1992).

So there you have it. Super Sonic was created a whole year later.

...Wow, you must not be into the Sonic video game series. Super Sonic first appears on the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis game called Sonic the Hedgehog 2. Sonic X is an anime series based off the video game franchise.

I have always wondered about this, well, not until someone mentioned it a couple of years ago to me. But, it is interesting to see how a manga series like Dragonball can influence a game like Sonic. I mean, they are so different.

TSC: I'm wondering just as much as you. Of course, the name of the folktale might help. Do you know, EE? :<

Kez: I heard that the Sonic Team wanted to make a reference to both the East and West (East ebing Japan, and West being Europe and America). For the east, they made Super Sonic (reference to Super Saiyan from Dragon Ball); for the west, they made the Death Egg (reference to the Death Star from Star Wars). I'm not sure about the Chaos Emeralds being a reference to the seven dragonballs because there was Chaos Emeralds in the first game. Of course, there was only six original Chaos Emeralds in Sonic 1. :\ Though the Emeralds have changed in number and color over the years, in each game.

Believe it or not, Dragon Ball had a BIG influence on a lot of things in both the East and the West.
