Which games feature battery-backed saving?

The other day I tried restarting my Silver version to find out that it would refuse to retain the data that I had saved. Now I'm rather parnoid that this will happen to my advance gen games; I don't want to lose all of the pokemon before pokemon goes online in D&P.

I think that the battery for Silver ran out (I hadn't played the game for years before I tried to restart it, opting for advance gen), though I'm not sure. Does anyone know whether that game and the ones before it featured battery-backed saving? Do GBA games still use that system?

Thanks in advance (no pun intended) for your replies.

No, dont worry, that bug (as far as i can tell) is only in the 2ed gen games, i have it on my gold, silver versions, i dont have it on any of my 3rd gen games, or my 1st gen games. Do not worry this is a 2ed gen bug.

I don't think that the GBA games have the same battery that the GBC/GB game paks have. The internal battery on your Silver has gone dry. It can happen with the GBA games, though.

I'm just wondering if they still use internal batteries for game saving purposes at all. Obviously they use them for keeping time in-game (though that is not going to be the case in DS or Wii games, and it isn't in GCN games now), but I was wondering if they use flash drives (not exactly sure how they work so don't chastise me) for game saves instead.

That glitch only happens in the GBC Games.

It won't happen to any of your Pokémon Advance games, as long as you don't use any cheating devices on them. And if your newer games do end up like your Silver one, it should say as a warning:

"The Internal Battery has run dry."

"Time-based events will no longer occur."

I'm not talking about time-based events. I'm talking about saving data, as in, if I catch a pokemon and press start -> save then shut my GBA off, will my pokemon be there when I go to turn it back on.

That happened to my silver. Best save file I ever had with first pokemon raised to 100 (good old Zephyr the Pidgeot...) suddenly got erased one day. I'd be hopeful though since I've only had that issue with silver, so chances are its a second gen exclusive

A little lesson for the uninformed on battery saves...

There are two types of RAM on which saved games are stored in video games; volatile and non-volatile. Volatile RAM is what older video game cartridges used, while all newer game cartridges for GBA and all for DS use non-volatile. Volatile memory requires a battery to store the data in it; if that battery runs dry the memory will no longer be able to store any information. Non-volatile, on the other hand, does not require constant power to keep its data.

Using the purely unscientific method of examining the inside of my Ruby and Firered carts through their translucent plastic, it appears that Ruby/Sapphire do have batteries, yet Firered/Leafgreen (and presumably Emerald as well) do not have a battery. To my knowledge, I believe all newer GBA games use non-volatile memory; thus eliminating the need for a battery.

It’s happened to my Gold version as well, however fortunately my sister’s Silver version still seems to work fine and I don’t think she even realized she still had it in the first place. What she won’t know she had she won’t realize is missing, afterall...
