Alakazam mostly just based on experience. It's so swift, and has such high attack, it makes for a great opener, and can harshly damage, if not kill, a foe quickly.

Alakazam, modest nature, fire punch, ice punch, thunderpunch, and psychic. And if you have a modest natured ditto and a everstone, thats not a bad idea.

Gardevoir. If only because Alakazam loses its element punches in D/P. What is it going to use instead... Shock wave? Lol
Gardy may have less sp.att and speed than Alakazam, but it has more even defences and a nicer movepool (in my opinion).
And quite frankly... male Gardevoir rule. Cross-dressing Pokemon for the win!
Male Gardy would go extremely well with shiny male Mimiroppu (I still can't believe that thing isn't a female only Pokemon).
EDIT: Starmie is my favourite psychic Pokemon; and probably my favorite water one, too.

Gardevoir, IMO, it has better defense, my Gardevoir can take about 3 Earthquakes before going down, whereas, I can see Alakazam barely survive one
How about this....get both.
here's the moveset each can learn because Alakazam is on my team and Gardevoir is her replacement just in case alakazam is in a bad slump

Ok, please don't use those movesets. A physical attack doesnt work on alakazam, its attack is awful. And a Gardevoir should have Psychic.
Shadow ball could be used on either if you trade to D/P
