Well, GinnyWeasly&thebasilisk, in my opinion, you should go with the Mudkip. It has advantages over 4 of the 8 gyms (Roxanne, Wattson, Flannery, and Tate & Liza). If you teach it an ice move you will also have an advantage over Winona. Treeko only has an advantage over 3 of the 8 (Roxanne, Tate & Liza, and Juan) and Torchic only has an advantage over Norman provided it has evloved into Combusken and knows a fighting move. So I think you totally go with Mudkip.

You should choose mudkip, water pokemon starters are and have always been the best choice, they all have great stats and are powerful

You will be missed:(
I went with Treeco. He has an advantage over the first gym, and has the best base stats of the 2 that do. By the time you get to the other gyms, you'll probably have a pokemon ready to fight it.

Back I guess??
If you´re in emerald:
Hard game→Torchic
Average game→Treecko
Very easy Game→Mudkip

I would go with Torchic, I like tough games, but it´s with you the final choice.

Just needs a guitar.
Well Torchic can evolve into a very strong Blaziken, but that would take awhile. Treeko is a little bit weak starting off......

Mudkip has good overall sprites and is the first water starter pokemon to not be weak to thunder, so I'd choose Mudkip and not just because it's my fav.

It's entirely up to you, if possible, try to get all of them, they're all awesome pokemon. If it's not possible, then you should choose Treecko, when it evolves it can learn a very good move - Leaf Blade and it's fully evolved form Sceptile has really good stats. It's up to your preferences, as you can see everyone has a different opinion.

You can decide based on this:
Sceptile (Treecko's fully evolved form) - Good Sp. attack and Speed
Swampert (Mudkip's fully evolved form) - Good Attack and HP
Blaziken (Torchic's fully evolved form) - Good Attack and Sp. Attack

My first was Torchic actually. He did a very good job in most gyms and even in the Pokemon League.

But, really it's up to which you prefer. They all have their good and bad qualities.

Arrow

The Southern Cross
I also went with Mudkip. I didn't know too much about the gyms, so I was just lucky, I guess. XD But nevertheless, I don't regret choosing Mudkip.

and...

Hard Training-Torchic
Average Training-Mudkip
Easy Training-Treeko

the types and training have been like that always.

(on topic): imo go for mudkip although i chose torchic bcos i think blaziken is cool.

Choose
Mudkip: If you want to beat the game
Treecko: If you want to have some difficulty
Torchic: If you want a REAL challenge

You know, Torchic was always a favorite but I'd say Mudkip. It owns most of the game, but really all three are good Pokemon.

I had Treeko and it really sucked...

No help in Elite 4 except the last one... can't be trained well at the end of the game (victory road)

Learns good Grass-moves very late and so one

I don't recommend Treeko!

I think it depends on what type of training experience you want. I chose Torchic because I like a challenge. If you want to breeze through the game definitely choose Mudkip. For a moderate difficulty choose Treeko.

the ever popular question

I went with my favorite starter, Mudkip, but by the time I reached the Elite 4, my Swampert was more of a HM slave than anything else. Mudkip was ok through the main journey, but I choose Treeco instead for my Ruby and thought he and his evolved forms were better, sure they take awhile to learn decent moves, but in the later game I believe they are great. Torchic is also good, because Blaziken rocks. His attacks (granted he has a varied set, not ALL FIRE ATTACKES!!) are super-effective against several type combos.

My pick for best starter that you should start out with is Treeco, his speed will save you plenty of times early in the game.

Treeko is a bit of a bad starter but it really starts paying off when you have a sceptile.I've got three skill full sceptile in my emerald. It matters to the player's strageties anyways on what you choose.

Oh yes it does! I beat almost every pokemon with just my sceptile in there. You probably didn't train your sceptile good!
