Which rival vs. rival league battle was the best?

LilligantLewis

Bonnie stan
Paul vs. Barry
Cameron vs. Bianca
Sawyer vs. Tierno

Both in terms of storyline (hyping up the winner for his battle with Ash) and also just in terms of a good battle (entertainment value)

Paul vs Barry, and it's not even close. Barry admired Paul as a trainer even though he knew nothing about his true color. When they first met the contrast was already made, as one was really happy to get the free Beacon badge while the other was absolutely disgusted. It really showed that Barry takes battles very lightly and wants to shortcut everything to become the best, while Paul understands the process and takes training very seriously. At the league, the contrast was made again as Barry went into his match vs Paul as if it's the true testing ground on where he stands as a trainer and focused a lot on trying to impress Paul, while Paul merely looked at Barry as just another trainer he had to go through. The battle itself was well done, as Paul managed to cripple Barry's speedy Pokemon handily. Barry seemed to overreact to every little thing and gets too excited/flustered in all situations, while Paul was focused all the way through. It was a true display of a naive and overconfident trainer who thought he was good vs a trainer who experienced a lot and knows what it takes to be good.

The other two were trainers that they never met before the league, so there's that.

Paul vs Barry and Tierno vs Sawyer.

In Paul vs Barry, the most intriguing thing was that the battle was not easy going, the individual battles were quite tough, but still the battle ended in a clean 3-0 sweep in favour of Paul because of his clever switching.

In Tierno vs Sawyer, this battle made Ash-Greninja's victory over Mega Sceptile even sweeter. This battle demonstrated Mega Sceptile's strength (damn Blastoise and Raichu got destroyed) and established it as a worthy opponent for Ash-Greninja.

Paul vs Barry because Paul cleverly switched out his pokemon to sweep his opponent,we also got to see him use some of his most powerful pokemon who were all in their final stages of evolution.Barry did pretty well in using the status move spikes to try and prevent Paul from switching which failed, the Ursaring/Hitmonlee bout was pretty intense,it hit Ursaring with so many effective blows but still came up short, just shows how much endurance training Paul puts his pokemon through.

Paul vs Barry. They were the only characters I actually cared for and Paul's perfomance was great in this battle ignoring the spikes and overpowering every of Barry's Pokemon with his strong and durable Pokemon.

Sawyer vs. Tierno.

Paul vs. Barry was a farce. The writers were so far up Paul's butt that they couldn't give Barry a single win. What was the point then? Just have Paul waste a Filler League contestant instead and have Ash fight Barry.

Similarly it could have easily been Ash vs Tierno, which would have benefited even more since that would have been Ash's first match on-screen, while DP Ash already had 2 battles that were fully shown prior to his important battle. Plus Barry vs Paul was very relevant for the plot, while Sawyer and Tierno had absolutely no beef surrounding it.

That match established Mega Sceptile's strength though. Sawyer's ace didn't have many on-screen feats before that, and without that, Ash's victory over Sawyer(consequently Ash-Greninja's victory over Mega Sceptile) would've felt kinda cheap.

I would have liked to see Ash vs. Tierno as well.

Not really. We already knew that Paul was strong. That is what Lake Acuity was for. Heck, didn't we learn in a previous episode that Paul defeated another participant 3-0? What more did we need to know?

Paul vs Conway would have been more interesting than Paul vs Barry because both are smart battlers,Barry isn't that great in the power or battling department, the guy idolizes Paul yet doesn't follow all of his methods,he has 1 powerhouse but the rest of his pokemon are average at best, and his battling skills are nothing to ride home about.

The closest we seen to a Paul/Conway versus matchup was back in early DP when they competed in the Hearthome City Tag Battle Tournament,Conway outsmarted Paul with using the move Feint to destroy Elekid's Protect.

And Paul's Electivire was also showcased during his match vs Barry. Granted it probably didn't need to show anything more than what it did vs Ash, but it's still nice to show what it was capable of prior to that battle.

Paul vs Barry was more of it's own battle rather than just a showcase of what the trainers are capable of. I would argue Barry had a stronger tie with Paul than Ash. Him and Ash were simply two trainers who meet each other often. Barry wanted to fight Paul really badly to prove he can line up with him since his debut, and when he did he gets slapped back to reality and realizes it's not that easy. Ash vs Barry would have been more boring than Paul vs Barry tbh.

Which was the whole point of Paul vs Barry; you have a trainer who thinks there is a shortcut to greatness and believes he can blindly become stronger simply by copying other people's ways get crushed by a trainer who is obviously more experienced.

Paul vs Conway would have been nice, since Conway seems to be the only trainer who could realistically outwit Paul. His ability to prepare beforehand and bring specific checks surpasses Paul.

Paul vs Conway in the Sinnoh league would've been great. Paul is a more experienced trainer and Conway is a smarter one.

Because I actually care about both those trainers, and Barry didn't end up straight up cannon fodder like Tierno/Trevor

That's a match i would have loved to see.

As for the question I have to give it to Paul and Barry because like others have already said I cared more about them compared to the other choices.

Agreed, Barry had a drive to fight Paul. The others were just shoehorned in because they had no one other to fight imo.
