Something I have learnt recently is that the end credits of Stadium 2 show various Kanto vs Johto match-ups
1. Erika vs Falkner
2. Misty vs Whitney
3. Lt Surge vs Morty
4. Brock vs Jasmine
5. Blaine vs Pryce
6. Sabrina vs Will
7. Bruno vs Chuck
8. Koga vs Janine
9. Bugsy vs Karen
10. Lance vs Clair
11. Red vs Blue

What's interesting is the fact that match-ups. 2, 3, 4 are exactly the same as GBC Gym Leader Tournament fights, to the point that even many of the Pokemon Match.

So who did it first and who inspired whom?
