Salamence mostly due to it's looks and because it can mave so much uses in competitive Battling. DD Mence and Elemence just to name two. Also, bedcause of it's adaptability as mentioned.

Salamence is used more often than Metagross. Now in the 4rth Gen it becomes really deadly. It can go physical or special and can still do lots of damage to foes.
