Who will Ash defeat in the Masters 8 tournament?

So who was the fake out here

In all honesty looking how the tournament is set up Lance is probably the fake out.
Really? Judging by what they did with Alain? Cynthia is even if that means she's fighting Leon. The anime is defiantly interested in the Kanto v Kanto stuff.

Yes really because the only way Cynthia is fighting Leon is if the Semifinals match up are shuffled.

However given the fact that they specifically went out of their way to show the tournament bracket like they did, those are only really used in single elimination tournament that have set match ups.

Basically it’s likely that Ash will be fighting Cynthia in the Semifinals. It’s pretty unlikely that semifinal match up are getting shuffled because in the type of tournaments where the participants are shuffled in each round like that they don’t show the tournament bracket/chart.

Basically Ash is going to be fighting Cynthia or Iris in the Semifinals while Leon will fight Lance or Diantha in the Semifinals. They wouldn’t really show the tournament bracket/chart if the matches for the semifinals we’re going to get shuffled.
Don't really get this. The tournament bracket still is a combination of whoever wins that bracket and still moves and connects with the line of whoever won. That isn't confirming anything.

Don't forget Lance still has not displayed his MGY and sorry they're just not doing another Lance vs Leon match AND another Charizard match and if they do...corny

Just going pairings within itself

No, actually that does because no matter the outcome of the matches turn out the only way that Lance battles Ash is if he beats Diantha in the first match and then beats Leon in the Semifinals to battle Ash in the finals.

This because Ash and Lance are on opposite sides of the bracket. They don’t show brackets/tournament charts in tournaments where the matches up get shuffled each round.

No?
Ash vs Lance
Iris vs Leon

and if they want to avoid Iris winning

Cynthia vs Leon

Ash vs Lance

Brackets mean absolutely nothing.

You argued earlier that it's possible that Leon and Lance fight in the semi. Going by the bracket logic then that's never happening because Diantha and Leon are positioned the same position as Cynthia and Ash. Diantha is winning just as much as Ash it. Guess that match will determine if they're truly saying that but thankfully it's right after Leon's match

The bracket is pretty clear on who Ash is going to beat. Otherwise, they would have saved the surprise after first round.

Lance is honestly only a fan favorite in the first match. Had it been Ash vs Lance in Round 1, that would make perfect sense. But Round 2 is where Ash should face an even stronger opponent, and Lance ain't cutting it. Neither does Iris. She lost to Ash before and hasn't fought Ash again, thus Ash beating Iris again would be a slap in the face. At least making Cythnia sweat and get serious is a good enough achievement for Iris.

Brackets mean absolutely nothing.
Brackets exist to literally show everyone which path they have to take to reach the final. Otherwise, they would’ve just make the pairings for this round, and once all battles are done, the pairings for the next round

Not that interested in “what makes sense”. We’ve already kinda went over how that works out. Fans don’t create the “logical” way the show should go because it’s subjective.

This whole posts reeks of “okay well since it’s already on the trailer she can mildly get her scared but she better not beat her or get that close and the only reason why she’s allowed that is because it’s on the trailer and I can’t change it”.

Cynthia can get worried and pushed but still must win on paper to protect her image. And that would be annoying with any character.

The bracket could be incorrect and Cynthia could fight Leon, Diantha with Leon etc and so goes on. “Stronger trainers” is subjective based on your age when your played and mentality when played DPPt because Cynthia is not this untouchable trainer that only Ash can beat only because of his MC armor.

Any trainer in that tournament no matter what the lineup here can theoretically realistically take or mildly push her. We know she’s stronger than Lance and perhaps Steven but that’s it. Fresh meat is in this tournament and Lance could of gotten stronger. She’s not untouchable. At very least say she’s winning here because she has better strategies etc besides “well she’s better than Lance, Diantha and Iris”

No, that’s not how brackets work.

How that specific format works is Lt hat is being showed in the image work like this(here is an example of how it works):

1st round matchups
Left Side:

Leon vs Alain: Leon
Lance vs Diantha: Lance

Right Side:

Cynthia vs Iris: Cynthia
Steven vs Ash: Ash

Semifinals

Left Side:
Leon vs Lance: Leon

Right Side:

Cynthia vs Ash: Ash

Finals:

Leon vs Ash: Ash

Basically look at how the line connect

Notice how the only time Leon’s, Alain’s Lance’s, and Diantha’s line ever connects to Ash is in the finals.

When I say the left side or right side of the brackets it breaks down like this:

Left side: Leon, Alain, Lance, Diantha

Right Side: Cynthia, Iris, Steven, Ash

So the only characters that Leon can fight in the Semifinals is Lance or Diantha while the only characters that Ash can fight in the Semifinals is Cynthia and Iris.
Okay, gotcha I get it know. They’re implying that Ash is fighting who wins against Iris vs Cynthia and vice versa Leon’s match. Question though, why play that game? We know he’s fighting Steven and he’s “fighting” Cynthia based on that bracket. Involving Lance isn’t even a read herring at this point because they “exposed” he’s never battling him. Why include both that bracket as “proof” and Steven all in the same trailer why Paul is prepping him to fight Lance, Cynthia and Steven? And you can’t pull the excuse “well Ash doesn’t know” because by that logic Paul should have all of their aces.

I definitely think it’s Lance. Ash vs Cynthia is arguably the most hyped up match that has yet to happen due to how long they’ve known each other. Not to mention Ash beating a Gyarados won’t be as hard as fighting a Megagross or MegaChomp. Also Cynthia being the most popular Champion would probably warrant them pushing her for as long as possible.

The Paul battle shows the range of difficulty of the Champion's aces:

Lucario has some missteps to fight Gyarados at the beginning, but overall flawlessly beats it.

Metagross is tougher, giving Gengar a beaten with lightning speed. It only took the newly learned will-o-wisp to slow Metagross down enough for Gengar to deliver the final blow.

Garchomp, I didn't see it faint but I did see Dragonite faint despite a head-on Draco Meteor. And this is Ash's first time fighting Garchomp.

From this, we can infer Cynthia > Steven > Lance

So of course Lance gets the boot and is to be fed to either Leon or Diantha.

Lance was the fake out. Gyarados took significantly less effort for Ash to beat than Paul's other two Pokemon.

The whole point of showing the bracket is to show who will fight who.

Also if this were seeded like a real-life tournament, the match-ups would have been

Leon (1) VS Ash (8)
Lance (4) VS Diantha (5)
Cynthia (2) VS Iris (7)
Steven (3) VS Alain (6)

But for the sake of the Ash VS Leon plot, they had to swap Ash and Alain.
