Who will Ash defeat in the Masters 8 tournament?

We are so back Zygardebros
Lance, Cynthia, and Leon do make sense given that they’re the Champions of the 3 regions that are on the Switch and where Ash’s current team is from. Just wish they brought in reserves to flesh out instead of the same 6.

I honestly hope Ash doesn’t fight all 7 of the rest of the Masters Eight because his current team will be soooo stale by the end of it. There’s only so many ways you can make Lucario interesting.

That's why he should change his team up. The mere fact that this battle has Lucario/Dragonite/Gengar used makes me think they won't immediately get the first master class battle. And we just had Dracovish/Sirfetch'd before it. Honestly feels like set-up for Ash to use older pokemon.

Him using older Pokémon would be a start, but honestly call me old fashioned but I also really don’t want Ash to fight all of them because the world doesn’t revolve solely around Ash. I miss the days where everybody got a chance to battle and have some screentime like in the Unova tournament arcs. Seeing Paul vs Cynthia play out would be worth two episodes in my eyes.

This isn't your typical average tournament. The PWC is very likely going to include all the Regional Champions who have been shown to be vastly superior to Ash previously.
Now finally, after all these years, we have an Ash capable of standing up against them and holding his own in battle.

Battling and defeating every single Regional Champion would be the perfect growth in his story and more or less a type of redemption for all his losses across all the Regional Leagues. Plus, the perfect buildup towards the battle against the World's Strongest and Unbeatable trainer.

Ash using his old Pokemon = yes please?

It's such a no-brainer thing to do. A trainer attempting to become the world's best and choosing not to use a wide variety of powerful Pokemon in their arsenal would be nothing short of pure idiocy.

If Ash does end up using his old Pokemon, I hope he can make that decision on his own without someone having to tell him that, lol.

I still don't get how people assume that Lance is a more logical choice for his 3rd M8 opponent? There's been zero interactions between them in this series, and no foreshadowing in the past when they met about them ever battling. There's more reason for him to battle Paul or Diantha than Lance could ever have (unless Lance and Ash meet up in the next dozen episodes or so?). And outside of the clownish bait with Virgin, Ash has always gone up against opponents that have been foreshadowed in the past.

Oh let's not forget the over-saturation of Dragon specialists. I'd rather not see yet another Dragon specialist opponent for Ash. That would be what, 3 of them for official battles in a row?

I think it's Lance fanboying instead of looking at what satisfies things for Ash's past

If Cynthia mentioned she beat Tobias and Diantha mentioned she beat Alain the stakes would satisfy both never appearing again

I guess it's based on the end clips of a lot of the episodes where Lance was shown along with Cynthia and Raihan as part of the wall Ash needs to climb, to finally reach Leon.

That's just a generic slide to signify the penultimate destination. And I doubt he's fighting all other M8 members other than the 3 for the knockout tournament.

I really do hope he doesn't fight Lance. Rather the battles in the M8 be multi-types (thankfully Leon and Cynthia aren't specialists), getting sick of single typing battles.
People keep mentioning "Knockout Tournament" but there is literally no guarantee that this is going to be the case. I mean yes, at the start the tournament was implied during Lance's match with Leon. However, we see Raihan and Flint literally challenge Leon for the title in a non-tournament setting.

They could very well abandon the whole tournament concept and simply have Ash advance the ranks until rank 2 and finally have a battle against Leon.

Even Diantha and Steven are very likely going to be part of the Master Class and it would be wasted opportunity not to have Ash battle all of them (Even if it is a 1v1 or 2v2 battle).

With the number of episodes left for this series, any other format like a round-robin or ladder-climbing will be too much. At best, we'll get another M8 match outside the finale to have Ash climb to #7 and be safe from defense matches as #8 is the vulnerable spot to get into the Hyper Tier. There's nothing preventing them from challenging each other in the M8 outside said finale, to get higher in rank.
No round-robin or ladder climbing etc.
Same as the previous classes, Ash simple battles defeat's everyone and gets up to rank 2.
Maybe include Bea and Iris in the Master Class along with (Diantha, Steven, Cynthia, Lance & Leon).
Maybe wee see short previews of Bea and Iris winning/losing against other master class members.(But they don't battle Ash as their battles are wrapped up).
Ash battle's the other 4 and get's to Rank 2 and finally faces off against Leon.

Definitely enough episodes left to cover all these battles.

The new preview states Ash vs Raihan is the last match of this season for the Pokémon World Coronation series. The opponents at the Masters 8 could challenge each other during the season, but now that it will be over, Ash won't be able to change his position anymore. He'll go straight into the M8 tournament.

Alain - Cynthia - Leon

Iris is going to lose to Leon in semifinals and probably win against Lance in the first round
The most likely answer, because it wraps up the most plot threads.

Ash vs Alain rematch post-XY (Greninja or Lucario vs MCX)

Ash vs Cynthia, since her appearance in DP

Ash vs Leon, from the start of JN

Iris beating Lance and becoming a Dragon Master
