It's a matter of preference but I'm still a hardcore fan of MATO. (MATO is a she mind you.)

It's something about her cutsey SDfied characters that really tugs at my heart strings.

I don't like Mato's style. She had the kiddish, shoujo-ish style. I don't like chibi drawings. Yamamoto's style is more serious. I say Yamamoto.

Definitley Mato. I just love chibified styles. I wish Mato was still doing the manga though,I would have LOVED to see Crys and Wally in her style. ;-;

I really can't decide. I love both of their art equally.

I'm the same, it seems they both had their good days and bad... but, in the end, they were pretty consistent and managed to produce quality artwork.

Same here JazzJazz, I can't choose between them. But I'd say Yamamoto because I love his work a bit better than Mato's.

Also, the title should be this, not who's a better artist:

Which artist you prefer? Mato or Yamamoto?

Just be content that there are no spelling mistakes in the title... it's rare that we see that sort of thing on the forums lately.

MATO: Chibi and kawaii!!!
Yamamoto: More adult-looking characters!!
Both have their pros and cons. But if I'm forced to make a decision, I'd choose Yamamoto, 'cause of the way he draw blue XD

If you had asked me this question at the beginning of R/S, I would have probably said Yamamoto. His art was very beautiful, and stuck awfully close to Mato's. The only difference was that he removed the SD element.

But now? No, never. What started out very nice has turned into something quite ugly. Yamamoto's current art doesn't attract me, and the way characters of the past look absolutely disgust me. I mean...look at Blue for example. From the point Yamamoto took over, until the end of Crystal, she looked very nice. Now though? Ick. I don't like it. All the characters look so bad now. What happened to the style he used when starting out? That looked so nice to me. =/

So truthfully, it's somewhat of a tie. Mato and Early Yamamoto for me.

I really can't decide... Yamata was best when it was serious or if it was a battle scene and Mato was best for the times where it was supposed to humorous in my opinion. =0

I believe each artists' styles were perfectly suited for the time in which they are/were drawing. I can't see Yamato's more serious style fitting with the story the way Mato's did, and at the same time I can't imagine Mato being able to handle the FR/LG and BF series like Yamato is. Maybe it's just because I'm used to each's artists' style for each period, but I feel as though the writing has evolved and that the art has been part (while not a cause) of that transformation.

But in the end, if I had to choose one artist over the other, I would say Yamato. I'm not a big fan of chibiness, and his more realistic and serious tone is much more suiting. I will never get over how much I hated how adults looked during Mato's run. Outside of integral characters like Oak, Giovanni, the E4, etc., regular civilians all looked like garden gnomes. Yea, that'st just part of the chibi style, but I didn't like it. So Yamato gets my vote.

I prefer MATO and early Yamamoto. See the new Red and the first few Reds by Yamamoto and compare.

I don't have any of the manga,(for now, I might get the first three volumes soon)but from what I have seen I like Mato's art, but Yamamoto has some good art too. Really hard to decide for me.

*licks lips* Mmmm I perfer Mato's art. She makes Green so sex~y :0~~~ The way she makes Green move~! Anyuuuuhhh Dx <333
I also like chibi-fied characters :3 They look so darn cute X3 She makes each character look pretty spiffy =3 Though, I can't really imagen her working with the stuff going on right now.

I saw some Yamamoto's stuff, and he is pretty good at making me giggle in some scenes. I kind of perfered his older then his recent work. Sadly, the only character I really luff how he draws for the whole time is Ruby X3<3333
He is good making girls look attractive (I'm not messed up, shush! XP) and grown up looking characters.

Covering up, Yamamoto is good a certain things, but I will like Mato's art more :3~<33

I just saw some pictures of the FireRed/LeafGreen series and who is the current artist? I have a feeling it's Yamamoto... >_>

Now I like Mato's art better. The FireRed/LeafGreen Blue is just... ugh. >_<

(And I mean the girl, Green (The boy) is just too sexy. XD)
