Why are Dawn's Pokemon so underdeveloped?

Throughout most of the Sinnoh Saga, Dawn has barely grown. Don't get me wrong, she now has all her ribbons and has improved contest-wise. But she still has the same old Piplup, Buneary, and Pachirisu. These were her three original Pokemon and I would like to see either Piplup or Buneary evolve. Would you? It seems we've waited long enough. The only Pokemon of Dawn's to evolve were Aipom to Ambipom and Swinub all the way to Mamoswine. It just seems that the writers are blocking her team potential. They even had her give away her arguably strongest Pokemon. (Ambipom) I just wish her final team would be something like Empoleon, Lopunny, Pachirisu, Mamoswine, Typhlosion, and Togekiss. Now that would be a team that could give Paul a run for his money. What do you guys think?

Well she doesn't need to give Paul a run for his money because he's not her rival.

Her team is fine. Buneary just needs a new attack and Piplup has an Everstone so it won't evolve. Development =/= evolution.

They can't do anything else with Pachirisu. It can't evolve so they just gave it a new attack. I don't see anything wrong.

I know about the Piplup thing with Everstone and Pachirisu not being able to evolve. I didn't mean she was going to NEED to give Paul a run for his money. I was only saying that because Paul is clearly a strong trainer and Dawn's team would be able to handle a strong trainer if they weren't stuck in their pre-evo stages.

Why do you believe that based on the lack of evolutions she has on her team means her team is underdeveloped. You do realize in the anime that evolution while a part of growth isn't necessary to have a strong pokemon. Why would you think that and i don't even think if her team evolved to it's max that they would be enough to take down Paul because he is an whole different league from her.

Thank you, SPPf! :)
Evolution in the anime is a funny thing, especially since it's mainly cosmetic more than anything. A Pokemon evolving guarantees nothing in terms of its victories, as even with a fully-evolved team, the writers would still find plenty of ways for Dawn to lose. Likewise, Dawn can just as easily pound larger opponents using the most basic Pokemon, as we've seen time and again. Sure, it would be nice to see an evolution for say...Buneary, but it wouldn't really alter her skill level.

Yeah u guys are making pretty good points here. I guess I just really want to see her team evolved a little more. I'm just not a fan of pre-evo. I mean, there's a perfectly good Cyndaquil to evolve to make up for Ash's but NOOOO!!! LOL

She has already defeated stronger trainers so it's not about the evolution, it's more about the techniques the trainer uses. I mean, May's Squirtle defeated Drew's Flygon and he was clearly strong. There was no evolution needed.

I think Zoey can be a good match. If her Misdreavus, Kirlia and Shellos evolve we can have some good battling in the GF.

I do want Buneary to evolve. I'm still hoping it does.:)

It would be nice to see Dawn with some evolutions but she really doesn't need them. Coordinators don't need raw strength and evolution to win contest, as shown Dawn's Pokemon beat opponent's twice there body weight other then Mamoswine. It's not just Dawn, May's Pokemon didn't evolve much either while she was around. Blaziken didn't come till the very end of her run. It seems during the main saga's Ash's Pokemon evolve like in Hoenn and May's hardly did and now here in Sinnoh Ash's Pokemon are evolving again and Dawn's hardly getting any evolutions. May's evolved offscreen maybe Dawn's will too.

^Like buizel i think it's fine the way it is but if they evolve it at Dawn's departure then i would be fine with that.

When are we going to see that Togekiss exactly? 2 episodes right before the Grand Festival or will she catch that DP 142 Togepi as a Togetic And evolve it in the same episode.

Yeah, ok!

The toy of it is coming out in April, so around then. I guess that could be right before or after the GF depending.

Like people above have said, in the anime strength isn't measured by what stage a pokemon is in. Pikachu, Bulbasaur, Squirtle, Piplup, and Meowth(Tyson's) are among the strongest pokemon owned by a main character in the anime.

I thought for sure that Cyndaquil would evolve at least once but sense DP is most likely coming to an end this year I guess we have another (May's) Bulbasaur on our hands.

Pachirisu can't evolve, Piplup won't evolve, and Buneary has semi-mascot status.

The same thing happened to May and to a lesser extent Misty. For the majority of their run they kept cute and cuddly looking Pokemon. Only after May was heading out the door or left did her Pokemon evolve to their fullest potential. Misty's Poliwag evolved about mid-season in Johto well after she caught it and evolved again towards the end. Other then that she only had one other evolution (Togepi shortly before being released) and two notable captures (Gyarados and Corsola) one of which happened after she left the cast.

The writers already hinted that they pick Pokemon caught and evolved based on their aesthetics even calling Piplup's evolutions " ugly " for Contests. They can get more mileage out of smaller, cuter, Pokemon then their tougher evolved cousins. (Source and nice read.)

Brock's pokemon are the ones suffering the development problems....

Not really. Croagunk's in the same boat as Buneary (Semi-Mascot). Happiny's fine for the most part. I imagine she'll evolve at least once but it's low on the writer's priority list compared to Ash's evolution-fest. Ash has evolved more Pokemon in this season then any other season to date.

I think like An00bis. Pachirisu can't evolve, Piplup does not want, and Buneary is a mascot. The problem is only Cyndaquil. I think it should evolve one day but it won't happen because they want that Cyndaquil will get the battles and screentime in contests and not Quilava.
I think we can't complain, because she will get a Togekiss.

Ash-kid

Ash-kid
I think that Cyndaquil will evolve when Dawn will meet Ash in the next region. And maybe also Pachirisu will get an evolution until then. But I don't understand why we should compare Dawn to Paul. We should compare her to Zoey's pokemon heights.
Glameow>Pachirisu
Finneon=Cyndaquil
Shellos<Piplup
Misdreavus=Buneary
Kirlia<Togekiss
Leafeon<Mamoswine

So her pokemon are at the same height as Zoey's pokemon, and even taller.

There is nothing wrong with Dawn's team, IMO. She's always had a great team.

Buneary needs more battles, at least I would like it.

We can't predict Dawn's future position on the show, especially considering Ash still doesn't have his 8th badge, and Torterra and Togekiss haven't been introduced.

She doesn't need evolved powerhouses for contests. Her pkmn are just fine.I think that in contests the team has to be like the coordinator so in the case of Dawn her pkmn are cute & girly.
