Why Best Wishes and Iris are my favorite

I think they just wanted a fancy term for Langley's hobby, even though they didn't have to go that far from my perspective since she was hardly anything more than a glorified Ice-type specialist. One thing that I wish the writers had done was make Drago from that one Decolora Archipelago episode Langley's relative since she also specialized in Ice-types, but by that point in BW the writers had given up on the BW rivals and any subplot that could've involved them even just loosely.

I don’t necessarily hate BW but I feel like the complaints against them are fully justified.

The main reason why I don’t like the series nearly as much as others is how Ash was handled. The humor somewhat makes up for that. Iris and Cilan were cool characters but nothing that interesting. I found every rival not named Steven lackluster though. Their interactions with each other (i.e Georgia and Burgundy being salty commentators at every tournament) was cool but I felt it was very lacking with the actual rivalries.

The best things to come from BW were the constant tournaments and Krookodile.

This is pretty much my opinion. Also the cancellation of the TR vs TP episodes pretty much killed all the hype that was building up to that in the first 20 or so episodes.

And then we got "BW2 Team Plasma" instead...

Speaking of the cancelled Plasma-dan episodes, I have to admit that I was never all-that excited about them in the first place. I liked the Plasma-dan initially, but the two-parter that was supposed to take place at the Resort Desert didn't interest me when we got the first information about those episodes. I bet that the whole thing would've been average at best even if it had aired as planned.

One small thing I really liked in Best Wishes was how each companion had their own rival. Then watching all the rivals come together and interact was hilarious. Iris/Georgia interactions never failed to amuse me, and Burgundy was such a nice foil to Cilan. There were so many supporting/recurring characters, it really felt nice.

Too bad none of those characters ever appeared again after episode 108 in a 142-episode series.

I found her rivalry with Cilan to be weird and more so an obsession than an actual rivalry since they only battled once and Cilan always seemed indifferent towards her or neutral

I also found it weird Cilan never became an S-class connoisseur when they clearly set him up for that.

Krookodile

You would like the Dark-type ace.

:p you're not wrong. Though Greninja is slightly less impressive to me because it's not a goofy show off but it makes up for it with its power

Dent reaching the highest tier of the Pokemon Sommelier ladder would've been fitting, so I also don't quite understand why the writers didn't give him closure by having him achieve his goal. At most I would've liked to have seen a competent Sommelier become Dent's rival in place of Cabernet.

I never had any real problems with BW or Iris as a character in general other than Cilian being pretty dull as a character that relied too heavily on the constant “I’m a connoisseur” gag. My main issue was that Iris treated Axew too much like a small child and let it play too much and not do more training to help it get stronger. Togepi literally had more training from Misty than the Dragon had. And she hardly used Excadrill even though it was her power house until Dragonite and then the Steel Type was shoved aside and rarely seen outside of group camping scenes.

Axew being like a child was something that bugged a lot of people because Axew never grew out of that baby mindset. I'm not just talking about him not evolving either but that does sort of tick me off too haha.

I don't know about that. I don't remember Kasumi doing any kind of formal training with Togepy, and it seemed like Togepy learned most of its attacks off-screen or by accident. Iris was at least shown having several battles using Kibago to make it stronger, such as against Satoshi and Shirona I believe.

There was the one episode beginning where Misty tries to teach Togepi how to attack a tiny dummy but it hugs it instead and then Misty shows it how to perform a Headbutt and ends up hurting herself. I believe it was the Pinkin Island episode and where Togepi learns Metronome. Misty is describing to Togepi how to attack but it doesn’t understand since it is a baby.

Basically one brief instance and then she gave up completely then. Iris' moments with Axew weren't exactly well flourished either but they were at least ongoing and she made SOME progress, just not NEARLY enough for what was set up.

As nostalgic as Togepi is, I think nearly every baby has topped it in terms of agency with its trainer up until its two part finale. Even the likes of Dedenne and Shaymin were successfully commanded and took part in a few trainer events. Misty couldn't do much with Togepi besides carry it.

BW's biggest issue was hyping up big at the start and almost never amounting to its bluster. Everything just sort of fizzled out without proper conclusion. I get the feeling even if the TR vs TP arc had happened, it wouldn't have altered the course of the series at all, and both teams would have just slowly dwindled the exact same way. The only outside force we know had impact on how the series charted was the fans and creative team wanting comical TR and Wobbuffet back. I don't think it was creative forces being stifled that hindered BW as much as them just trying something different and not knowing where to go with it. It was at least the start of them trying to branch out the formula though.

I don't typically like comparing Kibago with Togepy since their character arcs were much different, but while I acknowledge that Iris made more progress with Kibago than Kasumi did with Togepy in OS, I thought Kibago was unapologetically irritating and irredeemable. It almost seemed like he went out of his way to be a nuisance, which is a shame since I like the Kibago line in the games.

Honestly, for what it was, Axew was endearing. Like some pets in real life would often do things annoying.

He had a habit of wandering off and getting into trouble, and never seemed to learn his lesson to stay close to Iris. I just found it very irritating, because Pokemon are typically smarter than real-life animals, so you'd expect Kibago to be less likely to get lost as the BW series progressed, but he still managed to go missing at the Isshu League and that episode was wasted on showing the fallout of his misadventure instead of it being used primarily to showcase the Isshu League battles.
