Why Can't People Get It Right? Annoying Things and Pokémon

When my sis pronounces "Psychic" like "pis-tic." It sounds so... inappropriate.

Other than that...Who cares if someone can't pronounce a Pokemon's name right when maybe they don't watch the anime, or if they spell it wrong because Nintendo makes difficult to spell names? That's a little harsh, isn't it? Also, you can't expect everyone to know about EV/IV stuff, when some of us just don't have the time or patience to learn it. Besides, I read the guide on the main site and it made absolutely no sense to me.

IV's, all pokemon are born with different stats.
Ev's, beat a pokemon 4 times, you get another stat point.

They're not that difficult of concepts, but I don't blame you, I do think the wording could have been done better.

I don't pronounce Pokémon Poh-Kay-mon, I pronounce it Pok-eh-mon. Is that such a sin? :/

Not really, but its kind of stupid saying a word knowing you're saying it wrong isn't it. I think maybe its not that big of a deal if all you know is the english language where accent marks don't play a big role, but most other places probably consider it more wrong.

People can't get it right because they are imperfect.

No, people get things "wrong" because they don't know anything about it, which is why people like us go crazy when we hear it because we've been around the knowledge for so long.

I remember one time in school I happened to draw a pikachu in my notes, along with none-pokemon creatures, and this really annoying guy noticed. After that he accused everything I drew of being a pokemon.

I know enough to get by in daily conversations, and can understand ~80-90% of regular TV/movies without subtitles, unless it's a specialist area (like maths or science) but I'm working on that.

I can understand Kansai dialect (esp. Nara) and also a little bit of Nagoya and Yamagata dialects, although I can't speak the last two.

Cool. I don't have opportunities to converse, but I can understand maybe 40-95% of shows without subs, depending on what the show is. I can read simple novels without a dictionary.

Its also annoying when people write it as "phycic." Its not even just Pokemon, its an official English word! Plus they sometimes say it like "physic."

I do understand that. However, it is a shame that more people don't, particularly on the Trade Forum. Many people don't even specify natures. So, for example, it's often just, "I'm offering Arceus." What? How do I know if I want this Arceus? What if I already have one that's almost like it?

I don't pronounce Pokémon Poh-Kay-mon, I pronounce it Pok-eh-mon. Is that such a sin? :/
Yes it is! Now, I will chase after you with my Houndoom!

I understand how it can be bothersome, and no offense or anything to any of you awesome people, but really! :) Just my opinion, anyway. :]
Woohoo! I'm an awesome people! Thanks Gastlyman!

Also arceus is ar-see-us for me. Although I think a lot of people probably pronounce it that way.

Most people think this is the correct way to say it. It WAS how it was said before the Jewel of Life in the anime.

Those who think a good Swampert should have Dive, Surf, Waterfall and Dig and generally those that think a pokemon with all STAB is great. Especially when they use stuff and know that certain pokemon will be immune to them.
Also teh nubz that go through a game and only have their starter and version legendary.
Hyper Beam and Hyper Beam esque moves spammers.
And those who think they know pokemon but go wut when I say almost any event legend or rare pokemon and don't know type immunities.

People who don't know about tiers and just say bluntly: "you're a n00b my Deoxys and Dialga will totally p0wn Ur team"
People who think they're smart but fail at life.
People who don't know about ev's and give 'rates' to other SPPF'ers about how to play.
People who recomend Hyper beam.

Well if you're running Porygon-Z, I would recommend HB due to the sheer power from it. And Hyper Beam esque moves are great in the Battle Hall.

The strange, strange ways that some of my friends pronounce some pokemon's names. Such as Arcanine. One of my friends refuses to pronounce the 'canine' part of it, instead pronouncing it 'Arca-nine', against all the proof offered in the fact that Arcanine is a canine pokemon ¬¬

That's how I pronounce it, "Arca-nine".

Uh, the pronounciation of Kyorgre.

It's not KIE-OH-GRR...

and Arceus isn't

AR-SEUS...

My friend may know about Pokemon, but she tends to mispronounce a lot of the names. The more notable ones a being "Ray-ku" for "Rai-ko" and "Sue-ee-koon" for "Sui-koon". I correct her, but I don't blame her.

It only bothers me if the person knows how to pronounce the name, but mispronounces it on purpose.

Oh yeah, you know those official Pokemon handbooks? Yeah, they REALLY need someone who actually knows about Pokemon to go through and edit them. I mean, a little kid can point these out, why not get one of them as an editor? Come on, in the current ones, they have so many things mixed up in them. The more notable one is that they got Porygon and Porygon2's picture switched. And it called Delibird a Legendary Pokemon o_O. What's up with that?

And in the Legendary line-up at the end of the book? They forgot to put Celebi in there. Shaymin and Arcues aren't even in the book, but I think it's understandable, sorta.

Although i remember laughing when a boy of around 11 said Pidgeot as "PIJ-IT" But ohwell.

He probably pronounced it that way because the Pokemon Official Handbook lists that as Pidgeot's pronunciation. That book used to be a rather useful guide to me, but it was a tiny bit inaccurate.

But I really don't find it annoying when people mispronounce Pokemon's names, since I used to mispronounce some of them all the time for whatever reason. Instead, the things that annoyed me to some extent were:

- Someone thought Ash was a Pokemon

- I once met some kid who claimed to know all the Pokemon. Then I mentioned Hypno at one point and he didn't know what it was. Hypno's one of the lesser-known Pokemon, but still...

- People who use Action Replay, Game Shark, etc on a Pokemon game and call themselves the "best trainer ever"

- It annoys me to no end when people say I suck at the Pokemon games because I don't really care about competitive battling.

- People who quiz me on some unimportant Pokemon detail--like Heracross's base Attack stat and at which level Squirtle learns Skull Bash. It's even more annoying when they brag about knowing more about Pokemon if I answer wrong.

- People in the Pokemon fandom listing mistakes people make because they aren't as obsessive as they are.

Mewtwo152

Not dead yet.
^I see what you did there.
What annoys me is the way some people obsess over getting a pronunciation exactly right. Like with Arceus, I still try to say ark-ee-us, but still sometimes say ar-see-us, but I don't get upset when I do.

when ppl say shedninja instead of shedinja and when the evil we call 4Kids said arbok evolved into serviper or vice versa
Actually, I kinda liked the 4Kids voice actors better than the ones they are using now. But the Arbok mistake was waaaaay off.

Now the stats of Pokémon do matter a bit, but more so if you battle others competitively. You don't have to battle competitively, though. But either way, most people aren't going to know when every single Pokémon learns a move. Usually, it needs to be an important move for me to be sure to remember it.

- People who use Action Replay, Game Shark, etc on a Pokemon game and call themselves the "best trainer ever"
Now that is evil!

It really bothers me off when people claim that the animé uses numerical levels and use it as a justification as to why Pikachu has to destroy everything it battles (Because it should be so level 100 by now).

It drives me crazy when people, and voice actors, can't pronounce Pokemon names right.

I had a friend who would pronounce Wobbuffet as "Wobbuffay." Like, he was treating Wobbuffet as buffet. *facepalm*

I have a question. How do you pronounce Gardevoir? I pronounce it as "Gardevor." But Pokemon Battle Revolution pronounces it as "Gardevwah." Which is right? Mine sounds less weird...

I also laugh hysterically when 4Kids screws up dubbing the Pokemon anime or movies. Like the scene in Pokemon the First Movie when Meowth names the Pokemon getting cloned? He incorrectly names two of them. I forget exactly what Meowth said, but didn't he call an image of Scyther Sandslash or something?

And then of course there's the epic scene where Officer Jenny commands her Growlithe to attack by saying, "Arcanine, Flamethrower!"
I actually think the people in the show do not know the difference between Growlithe and Arcanine. Remember when Ash and friends meet Steven Speilbunk? He talks about a "Golden Growlithe" award, but the image shown in the episode is clearly an Arcanine!

i really hate it when the walk-throughs mess things up, and only my knowledge of Pokemon keeps me from messing up. For instance, my Pokemon Emerald book that I bought says this:
Leader: Brawly
Pokemon type:Flying
Recommended moves:Fighting,Psychic
Pokemon:
Machop:Fighting
Meditite: Fighting
Makuhita: Fighting
So, just there, there is plenty of mistakes. But I have 3 guides, and a 3 of them have mistakes...
