Why did so many people have trouble with whitney's milktank back in pokemon silver?

Was the milktank really that hard?!

  • Yeah if you don't level grind and use status lowering moves ect.

My brother and I have recently been playing through Pokemon Crystal again. With our team severely under-levelled, he thought it'd be fun to try and challenge Whitney without levelling them up any higher than her Miltank.

With the right strategy, it actually wasn't so hard. After taking out Clefairy with Heracross, we tried to quickly do as much damage to Miltank as possible before said Heracross was taken down with a Stomp. We then switched to our Bayleef, our plan was to try and get at least a Reflect up. If she used attract, we'd switch. Luckily she didn't, and she started rollout. So with Reflect up, we hit her with Poisonpowder and then switched into a female Aipom. Then we started spamming Mud Slap. Miltank kept missing, taking poison damage, and the reflect helped lessen the damage on Aipom while our little purple monkey beat the tar out of that cow with Swift. And this was with our team all around the levels of 14-19.

I think the reason why Miltank was so hard as a kid, was more due to the fact of inexperience. I always just used to just spam my Quilava's fire attacks without any regard for strategy when I was little. Needless to say, it usually never got me very far, especially after it would use Attract and leave it completely useless.

Probably you won't believe, but in every RPG I act as a training freak and overlevel my monsters (specially in pokémon). So I always chose Totodile in Silver and Crystal (although my favorite was Cyndaquil) and I challenged Whitney with a Lv.38 Feraligatr. Yeah it's true. That always led me to more than 200 hours of gaming before defeating the Champion. Although the first time I played Silver (it was my first game, it was in french and I didn't knew anything about Pokémon except the anime story) I chose Cyndaquil and challenged Whitney with a Lv.20 Quilava and a Lv.20 Noctowl (both male) and always lost till I restarted the game with a real strategy and purpose and then I was born as a train freak, 'cause know I'm obsessed with the fear of challenging a very powerful trainer and lose.

The machop you get in goldenrod is a female so it could help in your gym battle with Whitney.
That was sort of Game Freaks way of saying "Hey use this for the gym it'll help".

For me back in the day her Milktank was an absolute monster. You have to realize though I didn't have access to the internet, I didn't have the strategy guide, all I had was the knowledge I received from playing the games. For the most part I didn't know the type chart, there were only a few types that I could remember but I didn't know Fighting was strong against Normal-types. Don't even get me started on strategy cause all I did was foolishly spam attacks, after attack, after attack and got screwed over by attract.
So long story short I never fully understood the games all that much back then, not until my family got a computer. Who could blame me at not understanding the mechanics of the game, like type chart, STAB, EV points and IV's, much less breeding for better Pokemon. I was only five when Red/Blue came out, and seven when Gold/Silver came out. An I didn't learn about all this stuff until shortly after G/S was released.

So of course NOW that I understand all this stuff Whitney's Milktank isn't much of a challenge. With a good enough strategy which really doesn't take much that Milktank is easy to take down.

my Quilava had smookscreen so i used that, than i started to attack. ect. At that moment i was a lone wolf me and my Quilava, i was so happy with him... then he evolved and well i didn't like him as much xD

Ah i remember this as a kid.
I did have some problems with miltank but mainly because i was a kid and i didnt understand the concepts of the game properly.
But most people chose Cyndaquil. and if your anything like my brother. Only have like 2 or 3 pokemon. With many pokemon besides the machop being of any real use before that fight you were just focusing on debilitating miltank.
It was only level 20 to begin with so if you had Quilava and back then i was all about the dragon types so i immediately went after dratini in the casino. (cant remember if i worked my way 2100 coins or just traded it from gold) dratini thunder wave pretty much drops miltank on its pink dairy-air.

i think the biggest problem was not rollout it was stomp. that gave me far more trouble as even though it had a low flinch ratio. it always flinched me. every time.

Level 38? That's overkill.

Eh, life is a game.
Not to brag or anything, and I'm definitely not lying; I never had any problems with her Miltank.

Rollout is fairly annoying; I had to switch to decoy pokemon for Rollout to finish its play. I usually had 3-4 Pokemon by then so all were underlevelled; miltank always stomp first and usually flinched my pokemon =_= I never had ghost/fighting types so it was bad.

I was a little kid when these games came out. And even though I had played Red/Blue/Yellow by that point, I was even younger when I played those. The battle strategy that I learned as I got older and better learned the battle mechanics didn't exist for me yet, when I was 5-7 years old these games were still a bit advanced for me. I wasn't a veteran like I am now, so she kicked my butt on my first play through of the games until I learned my lesson lol

Indeed. She totally kicked my...ya know. But so did Bugsy and his annoying Scyther. And Lance with his Hypah-beamz. Really, in every pokemon game there's "a guy" with some annoying strategy which always results in loss, no matter what you, at least on the first try.
On Platinum, I've got my butt kicked several times by Cynthia's Spiritomb, as I didn't knew he hadn't no weakness, and I've tried both Shadow Ball and Psychic on him. On Yellow, by Lance's Dragonair and his Gyarados, specially Gyarados x my poor Pikachu, which couldn't keep up with Hydro Pump (accuracy hax). On White, Ghetisis's Hydreigon.
Either I was a really bad trainer or they were REALLY annoying...master of annoyance...ANNOYANCE CHAMPIONS!

It's sort of a hint that the game is giving you I think. You're meant to try and get a geodude/onix/Sandshrew against it. Or failing that, a machop. Any female pokemon or rock/fighting type stands more then a fair chance against Milktank.

Even how awkward it may seem.
When I was doing my Tyhlosion solo run it did not cause any trouble to me.(Probably because I was level 32 by then)
Though Clair and her dragonairs spamming surf made me do lots of grinding.
But being as low leveled as her pokemon are is really hard.
Especially if Clefairy will get a hyper beam or Explosion or any other powerful move.

I had more trouble with her clafairy than her miltank. it used metronome and destroyed my top order. after that her miltank was a pushover.

Faraway_Mew

Mew, mew... mew?
I used a female bayleef and it became a piece of cake to beat that miltank B)

Imo, Bayleef is the best starter to use against Miltank as it can take hits much better than the other starters and it also have access to poison powder for the whittling down of Miltank's HP. Being female= immune to attract. I like fighting gyms with my pokemon at around the same level of the gym leaders and the above is exactly what I experienced.

Chikorita was never the most useful starter, but for defeating Miltank, that's the starter than can do it.

pokemon jesus you took tne word right out of my mouth. using rollout and milk drink made the battle super hard especially if you chose cyndaquil. however though you could catch a nidoran and use double kick that always help

Considering a lot of people were young kids when they played the game, may not have known much about type matchups, Whitney's Miltank would be hard. It's definitely tougher than anything you face at that stage, and if you don't have the right Pokemon, you're bound to get knocked out a few times. If you're old enough to understand all of the mechanics behind the game, hardly any Gym Leaders would pose a threat.
