Why did the writers remove Misty?

How do you feel about the writers choice about removing Misty?

you're right on this one as well, but people are going to asking the question and for some odd reason, they won't accept the "we have no idea and lets leave it at that" answer...
Eh, fair enough.

well, it is somewhat relevant to the Misty-debate, in that whenever the subject of Misty's absence comes up, the Pokeshipping-debate often tags along like some annoying kid brother.
Hehehe. That it does. Although in defence of the shippers, liking Ash is(/was?) quite a big part of Misty's character. In fact, considering what a romance-less show Pokemon is meant to be ;), it seems interesting to me that love has had a huge influence on the psyches of three of the main characters - Misty, Brock and Meowth. Hmmm...

I was also stating that Pokemon tends to skew dialogue in the show, usual with item or place names, but especially "shipping sensitive" diaologue, which is purposely done most of the time.
Ah, sorry for going off-topic for a minute, but I've always wondered about that. At which points did the dubbers play around with the shippy dialogue in the show? I know of a few instances, but not many, namely:

- Added in Jimmy/Marina lines in the Raikou dub.
- One or two anti-Rocketshipping lines in AG.
- Ash saying "I miss her every day" in Jirachi Wishmaker (actually, this one is questionable. As CyberCubed pointed out in another thread, the context of that line is Ash comforting Max over Jirachi leaving. So the dubbers were drawing a parallel between Ash/Misty and Max/Jirachi, and therefore might not have been trying to hint at Pokeshipping at all).
- Playing a romantic song during Gotta Catch Ya Later, and changing the clips in the flashback at the end to focus them on Ash and Misty.
- Changing "that boy out there is... my burden" to "And Ash will never be alone because he's got... me" in the second movie. Not really making the line more shippy, though, just different.
- Altering a scene (I think) in 'Wherefore Art Thou, Nidoran?'. Originally, I'm told, when the two Nidoran kiss and evolve at the end, Satoshi makes a remark about it (don't know what exactly) and Kasumi says he's too immature to understand these things. In the dub, the dialogue went - Ash: "Do you think people really change when they get kissed?" - Misty: "Guess we'll have to find out for ourselves." I can see how the dub version is shippier, although the body language is pretty shippy in both.

Just curious. If that's too OT, though, never mind.

you're right once more, it is a little unfair... I'll remove it.
Thanks. ^_^

I see... well, I guess this comes from my lack of knowledge about the various shippings, I mostly only know the more famous ones that get tossed around and what each of them are...
lol. I don't blame you. It's a scary world in Shipping. ;)

I suppose it was wrong of me to assume the "just because romance is very minamal, it means it's non-existant" idea...
Well, I possibly went off a bit there. ^^;; Most of the time, just because an idea isn't explicitly contradicted doesn't mean we need to give it the time of day. Example, there's nothing in the anime that says Jasmine and Claire aren't madly in love, but that hardly makes Jasmine/Claire possible canon. It's more that in Ash/Misty's case, there are quite a few suggestive scenes that can be taken as romantic, so it seems that Pokeshipping ought to be given its due as a reasonable interpretation of the show, if not necessarily a proven one.

I guess you're right on this one again as well, but at least continuity isn't as screwed up as in other fandoms like Soinc the Hedgehog's :p
:D Or Tenchi Muyo. The family tree alone is more headache-inducing than any pairing war. (...Wait, no, what am I saying...)

you are right on that one, but the FAQ already has overtones of the "English version sucks compared to the Japanese version" opinion to it... despite it supposedly being an "objective FAQ"

Even if you don't think the faq's very objective, it still helps to try making your Q&As seem as less biased as possible. One way of doing this is to say "There simply is no direct answer from the writers themselves, however, the popular belief is that...." and just go on from there.

But if that were the case, they would've just translated the line properly, now wouldn't they?

Maybe, but they might have rewritten the line for some other reason, like they wanted a better fit for the lip-flap... or they just really like Misty. (And who can blame them? :D)

hey I didn't say they can't like Misty, I'm saying that shes changed in a way that makes her better off as a character they bump into after/before Ashs journeys like Oak, Tracey and Mrs Ketchum.

What the hell? Right I'm outta here, another Misty topic going out of hand. Don't bother replying to this post because I'm unsuscribing to the topic

Yeah, ok!

What the hell does that have to do with this topic? Why aren't you banned yet?

i think in the anime, the new characters all have their personalities and goals to fit in with everyone having a life, whereas before it was all focused on ash and what he was going to be while the others tagged along. Now Brock is the girl crazy guy who looks after everyone practically, max is the one who wants to be a great pokemon trainer but isn't old enough yet, May has the pokemon contests. While Misty was a gym leader she ended up being just someone who wanted to be a water pokemon master, and we all know how far one gets with a single element...i guess they got bored of it, but i prefer the ash and misty couple and the may and drew couple too, so maybe she will come back more, afterall she was in 5 movies and plenty of episodes for a long time, they can't just cut someone out like that. I prefer her voice and personality to May's.

CyberCubed

Yeah, ok!
Well she wasn't removed from the anime completely, she'll still return as a recurring character every so often.

But there's really no point to take her away from her goal (The Gym) and make her tag along with Ash again. Misty has come full circle and has accepted her responsibilities, all in all her plotline is finished. For the writers to yank her out of there would be to destroy all her character development from the Hoso's and the few AG episodes she's been in. The writers seem quite content that they've turned her into a strong willed Water Pokemon Gym leader.

She hasn't hardly had any character development IMO, apart from some fresh clothes and a Gyarados, what's new?

I think the writers just keep her in touch occasionally because they recognise she has a decent following and so it would make sense to allow her to make small appearances anyway at least.

I reckon that they got rid of misty because parents were complaining at here insesent b****ing, but brought here back because kids complained. they also probobly removed her because of all the disturbing "misty porn" that was put on the web *shudder*

what on earth are you taking about?

if that was the case, going by you're logic, they should remove every single female character from every cartoon ever.

what I ment to say is, misty did a lot of complaining, and you know how influential TV is andyou also know how quick to complain the average parent is. also, the kids wanted to know what happened to mistys bike.

EDIT:: I mean no offence to TV. in the words of homer simpson: "TV! teacher! mother! secret lover..."

first off, "Misty's complaining" as you put it was what made her character so damn appealing, and of all the time that I've seen the franchise in action, I have never ever heard of ANY complaints over that. Why on earth would parents complain that a character acting like that? people act irritated all the freakin time!

and the bike plot was thrown by the wayside because it was completely unimportant to the storyline, only referenced a few times after...

CyberCubed

Yeah, ok!
Agreed. Why would a character who complains be kicked off the show? That reminds me of a gazillion cartoon characters, not just ones from Pokemon. Parents would be annoyed to see a girl complain? Eh....

Although I am curious what parents think of the first episode of AG, where May says she's 10 but looks the way she does. I find it amusing just thinking of what a mother of a 7 year old boy watching the show would think when she see's May say she's 10 years old.
