Why do people hate the PSP so much?

*Ignore the parentheses if you are confused by my convuluted typing style. I want this to be a casual post that you don't need to decipher.

IMO PSP is a really good handheld with good games and amazing potential. I'll admit, I don't have one right now (I borrowed it from a close friend recently because I'm deciding about buying one, well I actually had one before but it's a long story and it will divert from the subject) but after playing with it for two days I realized how good it was. SOCOM: fireteam bravo is a really good game despite the complaints. Auto-aim is not as bad as it sounds and it works really well with the PSP analog-nub. Megaman X Maverick Hunter, although a port, is a very fun game and is given little to no recognition. Not to mention games like "Me and My Katamari" and "Tekken: Dark Ressurection" which are on the horizon for this great handheld. After PS3 is released we'll see sony publishing even more amazing games for the PSP (because the pressure of releasing PS3 would be relieved by then and sony can focus on other things). Not to mention PSP to PS3 functionality. Face it, PSP is a really good handheld and deserves credit where credit is due. Many of you are angered by the fact that nintendo is finally recieving some good competition in the handheld area. PSP is not an N-gage and it's not a game gear. It's actually becoming quite succesful, especially in America and Europe. Nintendo's going to have to fight for it's food this time around and you know it. This is not to say Nintendo DS is not a good handheld, infact it's a really good handheld and it's the only handheld I own right now, I'm just really upset with all the PSP hate. Lastly, PSP is not a media device, it's a game device. Loading songs on this is ridiculous and loading movies on this is hell (plus you'll need an overtly large memory stick). Movie UMD's only sell better than game UMD's because there is more of them and they are cheaper (not to mention how hard it is and how much space it takes to load a movie on PSP without software). Also people like taking advantage of the little things a system can do (like how the DS wi-fi connection and opera web browser are getting alot of hype as of now) so you can't blame sony if UMD movie sales are passing the game sales, the same way DVD sales skyrocket pass game console sales in general. Bottom-line: PSP is a good handheld and it doesn't get enough credit. I know this is a pokemon fansite and pokemon is made by nintendo, so therefore there are many nintendo fanboys/girls on this site, but geez people look beyond the fence set in front of you and experience the amazing handheld (PSP) on the other side.

I don't hate the psp and I'm not a fanboy of any console. I just don't like the price and I hav'nt seen any good games on it.Plus I already have a DS which was alot cheaper and has a lot of games I like.

As soon as the psp gets a game I must have and the price drops, then I will pick it up.

It costs lots of money, beside I already have DS and SP...

*again, you can skip the parentheses

Yeah, the price is a problem. The only reason I held off on buying the PSP again was because of it's insane price tag (the first one I got for my birthday but I don't want to get into what happend to it). DS is a really good handheld (I'm enjoying Resident Evil DS and replaying Phoenix Wright as of now) but it seems like there is so much PSP hate just because nintendo is finally getting good competition. If PSP didn't come in, the handheld market would still be in nintendopoly and DS would probably cost $200.00+. Although I'm probably buying Vista on launch, I hate how companies like microsoft can monopolize the computer industry and get away with it. Microsoft OS's are not the best, but we are forced to buy them (there are alternatives like macintosh computers but those only run a minority of computer programs). In the same way gameboy's, although good (advance was one of the best handhelds I ever owned, color was horrible though) were forced on us if we ever wanted to play a handheld game up until now. The consumer only prospers from competition, we get selection and we get better products from all competing parties. I admit sony could do so much more with the PSP and besides the two games I listed, there is not much more good games on this handheld. However, things will only get better for PSP as games like "Me and My Katamari" "Daxter" "Gran Turismo Mobile" (where the heck is this game, it was the first psp game announced and it's still yet to be released, hopefully polyphony doesn't do this with vision gran turismo on PS3) and "Tekken Dark Ressurection" continue to be released.

If anything, it's ahead of its time, like Dual Core CPU's. That doesn't mean it's a good thing though.
There's no such thing as "ahead of it's time". That's what PS2 fanboys said about the Dreamcast. To those fanboys, everything is ahead of it's time unless Sony does it first. I haven't had a PC with a dual core CPU though, so I don't know if it has any advantages. For example, quad core CPU's, which are still in development, are going to be specialized for servers.

I don't hate the PSP, I just hate the fanboys. I've played a PSP and was impressed by that one fighting game... don't know what it's called...

guess whos back?
It isnt the PSP that I hate, it is the ignorant PSP fanboys. So many kids in my school always brag about how "Sony is the best company while nintendo is gay". They never even give any good reason why the system is so good (it seems like only the nintendo fans give good and logical reasons why the company is good, or at least where I live)

That is a stereotypical comment but in most instances it sadly is true. Even employees at gamestores are fanboys. I walked to gamestop after school to purchase Advance Wars DS and then I run into an employee that's a sony fanboy. I asked him for advance wars DS and he starts saying crap like stop buying games for your "gayboy DS". He told me to trade in my DS for a PSP so I'll be "gangsta" and not gay (I'm puzzled about how playing a handheld and enjoying it makes you a homosexual, especially when I have a girl friend). I'm 13 so I didn't try to start anything. I just purchased my game and left. PSP is a very good handheld but irritable fanboys can scare you off. Is this really sony's target audience?

My main problem with the PSP aside from battery life is the library of games... I'm not really into Sony's "market". There are a few awesome games on the PSP, like Guilty Gear XX, but I can just play that on PS2. Which brings me to my final point - too many of the games interesting to me are just ports or remakes of older games. I don't want to play Megaman X and Street Fighter Alpha for the billionth time, but that's more of a Capcom issue to me than Sony itself.

Moving on to hardware, I have no interest whatsoever in UMD's, I'm not really into online play unless its with friends, and the playstation's library just bores me for the most part.

I don't hate the PSP, but I do strongly dislike it. As for other people, I suppose it's cause Nintendo's been around longer, but yeah... most people prefer Ninty's stuff, and probably see the PSP as a possible threat, which is why they hold animosity towards it. I will say though, the PSP is doing way better than I expected to.

they don't really have any games that I like, their UMD library isn't impressive either. Although some movies that aren't released on PSP, you can't really blame them:

"Lucario and the Mystery of Mew! buy it today on DVD and PSP!"

But aside from picky entertainment, their fanboys, commercials, and target consumers really make them look like a bad company.

Games. Almost every game you can get you can also get on DS (w/ some touch screen) or PS2, making it a poor investment. Also why buy UMD's when you can have the much better DVD's. It was a poor investement, and tried to go ahead of their time-and failed. It is just very poor, IMO.

My opinion: I have a PSP, I got one before they came out in the UK for a not too bad price (although still much more expensive than my DS). About 2 weeks after I got it the battery ran out and I haven't bothered to charge it up since. My major problem with the PSP? Unless the only things you like in gaming are sports and shooting things, there is nothing on this console for you in this country. When I ordered mine I ordered a Japanese game with it, and just as well I did, if it wasn't for that game I probably never would have had anything to play on it.

And when you do have a game you like... It's nothing new at all. It's just another re-hashed version of the same sort of thing you've been playing on your PlayStation for years.

If they took a moment and converted their range of UMD's into a similar range of games, I'd love it. But it seems they've just totally neglected the fact that the PSP was supposed to be a GAMES CONSOLE, not a glorified DVD player.

Another thing I really disliked was Sony's attitude to faulty PSPs. It's no secret that a massive number of PSPs had dead pixels, mainly due to them being rushed. As a result for THEIR mistake, Sony does not honour refunds/replacements on PSPs with less than something like 15% dead pixels! When I got my new computer home and saw the monitor had just one tiny dead pixel, the first thing I did the next day was take it to the store and demand they replaced the faulty good which they had sold me... And guess what... THEY DID!

For a huge range of games I like, a new and unique technology and a product that was made with love, care and over 20 years of gaming experience, I turn to my DS, as do most people, the sales figures do not lie (although right now they do show a decrease in DS sales in Japan this is due to a) extreme shortages, many places have been DS-less for over a month and b) DS lite coming out in a month, I believe the sales of this console will take the PSP to the cleaners). If I want to watch a movie, I'll put on a DVD, I bet most of you will too.

^ Also a single pixel is 1/4000th of a normal 200^2. It may seem small, but consider that sony screen has about 250x700 pixels and 15% is...

_X___=_15%_
175000=_100%

262500/100
(delete zeros)
2625/1 so 2625 Pixels until they will CONSIDER fixing it

I'm personally not interested in the PSP at all. No games I'm interested in, and I've heard lots of bad stuff about it. It's expensive, the battery life sucks, and I've heard that the screen is reflective and you can't really play it outside. And it's got all this crap that I'd never use. Not interested in MP3s or or DVDs. If I want to watch DVDs, I'll do it on a DVD player or a laptop. And yeah, I'm just not interested. I haven't seen a single game I'd like. And then there are all those issues I've heard of about dead pixels, flying UMDs, and sticking buttons.

I don't think the thing sucks, I'm just not interested. It's probably not half bad. If I had games I liked, I'd want one.

Man, there are a lot of misconceptions about the PSP. Yes, there is a limit to how many pixels need to be dead before a replacement will be suggested. I've read on the website that it's only about 5-7 dead pixels though. Nothing like the numbers suggested up above. Battery life for the PSP is determined by what you do with the PSP. If you want to use the Wi-Fi feature, then it will eat up the battery life pretty good. Watching a movie will too, because there is a lot of UMD access. If the battery issue bothers you, all you need to do is get an extended battery. I bought an x-2 to replace the original battery. It gives it a lot more time. As for UMD's -vs- DVD's, yes, DVD's are more versatile. But you can't watch the DVD's as easily as you can with the PSP. I carry movies or games in my shirt pocket and the PSP in my pants pocket(s). So, if I ever wanna watch/play/listen (MP3's), then it's there. I bought a 2 gig stick so I can put movies on it where I don't have to carry any UMD's with me. As for the screen glare, if you get a screen cover (and I would recommend that you do that,) it can reduce glare significantly. Haven't heard of any other issues with flying UMD's and haven't had any problems with my buttons. I bought a PS2 dock so it's helped with operating the analog button. I dunno. I really don't have any problems with the PSP. I'm actually considering getting another 1. I'll have to admit that I do like most Sony products. As to being a fanboy, I'm not a fanboy of either Sony or Nintendo. I like em both though. Lovin the Resident Evil I just picked up for the DS. Still playing Untold Legends on the PSP. I got MediEvil also and it's a really great game. Dunno. A lot of the stuff I haven't played on a PS2 (although I do have one.) Really don't see the problem.

Yeah, but I think the main problem people have about it is the price. Seems like it's only us older people that can both afford the PSP and it's add-ons. I wish the price would come down so more people could check it out.

The price is just the obvious. It is also the games. It is just Multi-platform and remakes

That's gonna change in the upcoming months (about the remakes, I mean.) Lots of new titles have been mentioned. I like some of the older stuff though. Untold Legends is getting a new game next month. Can't remember specifically some of the other stuff, but can't wait for them to get released. I'd rather see the new stuff out rather than hear about what's upcoming, cause I can't never keep up with it. Metroid should finally come out next month for the DS though. I've been waiting forever for that one to get released. It's why I originally bought the DS in the first place.

My friend works in a store which sells such consoles, he got totally bollocked for replacing one which had just a few dead pixels, he was told then about the 15% (I'm not 100% sure it was 15% exactly, but it was something around there).

Even so, I would be majorly ****** off if I'd spent £150 on a machine and it had just a few dead pixels. I don't care what anyone says, that is a FAULTY product.

You know you can file a complaint and have that guy fired. GameStop wouldn't care about a cashier.

I was thinking about doing that but I really didn't want to turn the scenario into a big thing. I usually just avoid gamestop. I reserve game consoles and inevitably popular games at game crazy and I sell my games on ebay.

Future games for PSP that piqued my interest (although I don't have a PSP I may get one soon but only if half of these games listed get good consumer and proffesional reviews)

ME AND MY KATAMARI!!!!
MGA2
Tekken: Dark Ressurection
Daxter
Gran turismo:Mobile (Where is this game)

Future games for DS that piqued my interest (I must purchase at least half of these (They are all so good!), but I'm trying to lower my gaming budget)

METROID PRIME HUNTERS!!!!!
Brain Training (playing games and raising your IQ at the same time, it's a match made in heaven)
New Super Mario Bros.
Legend of Zelda
Final Fantasy III remake
