In hindsight I can see the faults and limitations of GSC, and can appreciate that Game Freak have definitely made measures to improve on them with the 3rd and 4th Generations. Unfortunately, I think that the games came at the wrong time because trying to fit two whole regions onto one Game Boy cartridge was just too much, as shown by a rushed Kanto and small Johto region.
However, I can only say that I thoroughly enjoyed playing through Silver as a ten year old kid and as a result I look back at the generation really fondly. Now that i'm 18, I still love my Silver and Crystal and play them from time to time. When I first played through the games I was astounded by the continuity from RBY to this generation, and really loved travelling through Kanto again. Me and Feraligatr tore through the Gyms, and my mind was simply blown when I encountered Lugia for the first time. The same goes for Ho-Oh and also the shock at seeing the Dogs in the wild for the first time. I was also shocked when the game seemed to be all over, when I found a new place to explore and found none other than Red awaiting me for a battle.
As I said, I love what has been done to improve the franchise in RSE and DPPt, and love travelling round the Hoenn and Sinnoh regions. On the other hand, I feel like Johto won me over the most and i'm not saying that through a nostalgic mist. GSC are honestly the games I was most awestruck over at the time of purchasing. Not even Red and Blue made me feel so happy.
Of course, I now see how linear the games are, but i'm hoping that HeartGold and SoulSilver have the capacity to show us all what Game Freak intended for us given better technology to work with.
