Why specialized teams?

I'm kinda new to pokemon and I can't wait for D/P to come out in the US, and I have a question about team building. I was looking at a few old threads I saw one where people were talking about the types of teams they use. Some people use a balanced team and some specialize with water, steel, dark, ect. What I'm wondering is why do people make specialized teams? Doesn't that leave you open to certain pokemon? How would a trainer specializing in water deal with a trainer who has a good electric and grass type?

Well, A water type trainer will go for dual types.

Take Swampert for instance, He's Water/Ground, it's only weakness is Grass, But Swampert can learn Ice moves such as Blizzard and Ice Beam, and Ice moves are strong againest Grass types, hence giving the Swampert some defense.

It's all in the moves.

Trainers that often choose certain typed Pokemon for a team, generally just stick to the type, and have access to a wide variety of moves from those Pokemon. TMs and HMs are great in this instant, as a large variety of certain Pokemon can learn these (Surf, for example) while having the nessecity (sp?) to continue battling.

Naw, it's the challenge of using just one type.
I have a mono water team on my Gold version.
Team:
Feraligatr
Quagsire
Slowbro
Qwilfish
Mantine
Lanturn.
This team kicks bum.

I prefer to keep a wide variety of types, myself. Though my old Red team had a lot of half-Flying types...

I tend to keep balanced teams of types I like, but I do have a Normal type team and a grass type team~

it just depends on whether you like a type enough to specialise in it

And in addition, it might be more fun to theme your team around something and see how your opponents deal with it. After all, after taking on so many in the Pokémon Stadium games, I found out theme teams work surprisingly well: Six Pokémon can destroy the one Pokémon on an all-purpose team that might be able to counter its strategy, and after that, they all drop like flies, becoming victims of said strategy. For example, a team themed around Toxic might have Earthquake to take on Poison and Steel types and perhaps Thunderbolt to dispatch Crobat and Skarmory. If you're prepared, they might not do much, but they'll continue to pick apart your main counter until it falls apart, even if five of those Pokémon got knocked out in the process.

Theming them on one type means you can also pretend to be a Gym Leader. I had planned on making an all-Normal team: Clefable, Smeargle, Swellow (or Mimilop or Ursaring), Slaking, Eteboss, and Beroberuto.

Specialized teams bring out the character of a trainer, in my opinion. Some people battle with nothing but ubers, maybe because they are scared to lose. I personally battle with my favourites and i'm sure a lot of other people do as well. Some people battle with a mono type team for a challenge or because they like that type.

Ta-da?
