Wii DVD Player... Is it worth it?

Is it worth it to buy a new Wii a year from now just for the DVD player?

Alright, I'm finally able to make another one of my now rare posts (darn school with all of its work) :( , and as far as I know, no one has brought the following up. Here we go:

About 1 year from now, Nintendo will be releasing Wii's with built in DVD players after all. However, there's a catch. There is no way to upgrade your Wii with a DVD player so you'll have to buy a new one. The question is... will it really be worth it?

Uh, it's optional. o_O And there's been nothing confirmed of a release outside of Japan. If you have a DVD player, then you don't need to play DVDs on the Wii. :|

There is no real point, DVD players are practicly in every house hold.

I dream in pixels.
No, I don't really think it's worth the wait and extra money. Although, if there are some additional features, it could be worth it. (Although I SERIOUSLY hope it doesn't have anything more than the DVD player, because then it'll make it unfair for "Original" Wii buyers.)

Heh, I'll bet it'll be called "Wii Lite".

Most people keep saying, "I already have a bunch of DVD players, I don't need this." But wait a second, the Wii isn't limited to home. You could have your Wii as a DVD player at a hotel, hey, even in the car when they come out with car adaptors. Or maybe your friend doesn't have a DVD player when you go to his/her house. I can imagine most people would rather bring their Wii with them than an entire DVD player. Unless of course you guys are talking about portable DVD players.

It's a game console, not a PlayStation 3. Wii DVD will fail because most people will already have a Wii before it comes out.

I'm sorry, but honestly, who actually uses their consoles to watch DVD's?

For the sake of practicality, who actually goes to hotels when on vacation just to play games or watch DVDs? ;\

Car adaptors and LCD screens? Not for a good long while. And majority of the time, people will be bringing games to play instead of movies.

Friend doesn't have a DVD player at their place? Have them come over to your place or bring a PS2 or DVD player with you. ;\

There's no need to actually try justifying the "need" for Wii to play DVDs when DVD players are completely standard and are faaaaar cheaper now than they were back when the PS2 was released.

This won't go far. Nintendo's already tried this with the Panasonic Q. Everyone already has DVD players, so it wasn't a necessity.

I actually use my PS2 as my DVD player. The one connected to my TV has really poor sound when connected to the speakers I have. Though I do also use my computer DVD player, so.. :s

The Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3 support DVD movies.
I want the Wii to support DVD movies too.
Onoz, they have it so Wii should be like the cool kids and have it too!

It isn't necessary at this point. Not when DVD is a media standard. It was fine when PS2 came out since we were still going from VHS to DVD. Wii does not need it. Wii is a video game console. Nothing more, nothing less. If you want to watch DVDs, play them on a DVD player. :|

You're thinking way too much like as if this were an Xbox 360 or PS3. o_O

The only thing new about the other Wii is that it plays DVDs. That's it.

And seriously, the Wii won't see a price drop any time soon. e_e It's been a year and neither version of the 360 has seen a drop. Wait until it's in its second or third year, at least.

I believe the Xbox360 is supposed to receive a price drop just before Black Friday or w/e that day is called IIRC.

Anyways, the fact is - the Wii DOES NOT need DVD support. There is no excuse, the Wii is a game console, and DVD Players can be found as cheap as $20 (maybe even lower).

it would be worth it if next year you didn't have a wii or a dvd player, but if not, i really doubt that anyone would bother buying another wii.
however, the question is, will it be blue-ray?

Uh, no? Sony's really the only company that's pushing Blu-ray in the game industry. Nintendo's aware that HD-DVD and Blu-ray are currently expensive and would not provide these with the Wii, otherwise making it expensive.

I'm baaaaaack
No point. You have a DVD Player, fine. No need.

I am just so angry that the wii is only in white when it comes out. I would much rather have a black one, but I don't want to wait.
