Will D/P make or break the franchise?

skarmachild

Cheer up.
None, it'll just continue it.

These games can only break the franchise if they're exactly like the games before it and the new pokemon look like neopets. Even so, people will still buy it.

you suffer
The second Manaphy was revealed it should've been obvious that we weren't going to be able to obtain it normally. It looked like it was definately going to be a promo Pokemon and as we all see, it is. Jirachi and Deoxys' abscence didn't really hurt R/S so I don't see how Manaphy's should effect D/P. My only concern with Manaphy is that we can actually get an event going for Ranger early so that there is a possibility of getting Manaphy outside of Japan; I don't want it to fall into the Celebi pit of obscurity.

No more than we can get Mew outside of Japan. Manaphy is in exactly the same boat as Deoxys and Mew: it's still totally unreachable (without participation in the non-existent events); there's just a really long chain of unreachable actions required to get it now. To top things off, that chain of unreachable actions now spans multiple games.

*prays for Manaphy quest to be accessible from EB Games download stations*
*paperclips Old Sea Map event to the same prayer to hopefully slip it past, too*

I got a Gameboy Pocket, Color, and Advance just for Pokemon games(I DID get Harvest Moon:MFOMT for my GBA, but that was over a year after I got the system, and it's the only non-Pokemon gmae I've regularly played on a Gameboy system), and would already have a DS(although not just for Pokemon games this time!) if I could afford one. Although I suppose that few people would do the same, even though common sense should tell them that Pokemon wouldn't stay on the GBA forever. If they're angry about games moving on to an obvious choice for a new system that they weren't planning to buy, they should realize that the gaming industry does not revolve around them. If they simply can't AFFORD the system...it's called "saving money".

And anyone who thought that Manafi would be easy to get failed to put it into its place as the "hidden" legend of D/P. Were these people angry at needing an Aurora ticket to get Deoxys too? People might like the little legends, but not being able to get them(short of a Nintendo event or cheating) never stopped people from buying Pokemon games before.

the first reason i got my ds was for diamond and pearl but have some other games now. Diamond and Pearl will help the series out. New Pokemon, New Region, New Console. Sounds good to we

Awaiting October.
i bought the DS for the simple fact that there will be new pokemon games

even though i love the tittles i have now on DS i think these games will most defidently have more pokemon fans buy the DS just to play these games

You said deoxys and mew are unreachable, wrong, deoxys has already been downloaded in events.

With what we have now, I'd say it's still way too early to say anything. But I'm expecting those games to be great. I think that, if they implement Wi-Fi superbly, and thus getting rid of yet another boundary that made the experience not as enjoyable for some, those games will be a downright success. Joining the entire Pokémon community will be a huge step and will make the former hindrances, such as lack of someone else to play with/lack of money completely superfluous once and for all. About the only problem I can foresee is the cuspid of wrong elitism taking over the battles, but eh... nothing is perfect.

In short, if they blow it with Wi-Fi support, that could make or break the overall value of those games. At least in my opinion. No matter how good the main quest is. All in all, it'll most likely end up being the same old in a new place with new people.

And well... I'm one of those few not much enthusiast about D/P going into the DS. But eh... what are you going to do? I'll just get it for D/P anyway, albeit I might get stuff like Mario Kart as well. I think Wi-Fi is an awesome concept, being an Internet junkie myself.

Another failure could reside in the actual Pokémon conforming the Generation. But as long as the ratio of related to old ones is favored toward Evolutions, and the Pre-Evolutions are ACTUALLY useful, there'll be no problem. The less Pokémon related to old ones, the better, though. I'm not getting my hopes up, but I doubt they'll blow it. But again, we'll have to wait, for the current known Pokémon haven't been much of interest. More like disappointments, but eh... that's just me as well.

In regards of the main quest... there's not much expectation. A change in the GYMs would be welcome, but I doubt it'll happen. A more menacing evil Team, if any, would be good as well...

The main selling point, besides the Pokémon Generation, will be the Wi-Fi support IMO. The success of this Gen resides in those two factors alone...

Don't be so quick to dismiss the value of seemingly useless pre-evolutions; certain ones such as Munchlax are immensely useful as marketing titans. However, I do agree that this shouldn't a point in excess. Considering the popularity of such creatures as Alakazam, I would expect that they would continue to attempt to please us with Pokemon that join in with its immense crowd of fans.

You do raise a good point in that the Wi-Fi feature will need to work well for this game to be sucessful, especially if they choose to hype it up. If it ends up not stacking up to the potential of such games as Mario Kart and Animal Crossing DS, it will definitely make the fans less enthusiastic to get the next game in the series, but if they are able to pull functionality out the wazoo with it, I daresay we will be pleasantly surprised. It doesn't just need to be battles; it could also feature contests and obviate the need for hard-to-reach events.

Yet, at the same time, I feel that the most prominent defining factors that will determine the success of these games are how the starters and (pseudo)legendaries perform as well as the overall journey the game takes. The three categories of Pokemon that I mentioned are by far the ones that receive the most attention from the public eye, and if they don't meet up to the specifications set by games past, this game has a much more magnified likelihood to capitulate like an anvil thrown into the sea. The same thing pertains to the journey; even if it is the cliché gym quest, Gamefreak still has plenty of opportunities to offer a creative spin on this plot through adding subquests and in-game vocations.

In Australia? According to the Wifi website you can only by them over the phone by ringing the Nintendo hotline.
I dunno if theres a best buy there. If not then theres always ebay.

It does not seem much different but rather generic. Since I do not see much of a change in the battling system. Even though we have new moves and stats for pokemon so that is always a plus.

I, and a few people I know, bought a DS simply in anticipation of D/P. I've been rather dissapointed with DS titles and realise that D/P may be the only one I can actually play for longer than an hour a day. That is to say, of course, that it is actually a good game. If it isn't then, I don't know what I'll do.

But add in the fact that Australia is about 2-3 months behind the U.S. so we get every game later.

T.T I guess you haven't played games such as Castlevania, Super Mario 64 DS, Nanostray, Metroid Prime Hunters, Tetris DS, among others...Flaaaaarrrrr...

Anyway, I'm hoping that the DS's features will serve the game well as for innovation, because it would be nice to have new fans to embrace the franchise. Pokemon needs a creative touch!

If it's the netbattle/smogon variety of elitism which you're afraid of, rest assured that Nintendo already has a solution and has already implemented it to good effect in existing Wifi titles such as Tetris DS. I'd say, with confidence, that for random, anonymous battles (if they are present), a ladder system will be used. People who don't EV train will be paired up with other people who don't EV train. People who use ubers will be paired up with other people who use ubers, and so on.

I'll agree with you in that Wifi does offer the greatest opportunity for Nintendo to make a killing, so I hope they do more than just provide, as Joe calls it, an "online Union Room." Anonymous battling (as described above) and trading (implemented in a manner similar to J Crystal's mobile trading) are two very good features I'm hopeful we'll see. For that matter, Nintendo could occasionally throw a few unobtainibles such as Celebi into the pool of tradable pokes now and then. (though I'm pretty sure I'm just dreaming...)
