Will Iris beating Cynthia create the worse backlash ever?

Is the backlash gonna be the worse?

Cynthia simps got up in arms about the mere posibility that their waifu wasn't the STRONGEST TRAINER EVAHH when Leon was revealed so her losing to Iris would probably bring out the manchildren again.

Favorite Champion people can’t let go off from their childhood if they could help it, defeated by a controversial character? These guys were defending Cynthia being a Dragon Master before that thread got deleted. How do you think that’s gonna go?

They both seem serious about winning so hopefully it’s at least a good battle. As a fan of both I just don’t care really

If Iris wins with one-shot schenenigans? Probably and deservedly so. But if the writers care to write her battle properly and show her winning in a hard fought battle where she manages to edge out thanks to the deep bond with her pokemon, becoming a "Dragon Master" or whatever that means in the process, there should be significantly less outrage.

The main issue is that Iris becoming Champion and her growth to reach that point was mostly offscreen because as good a trainer as she was, she definitely wasn't close to that level when we left her at the end of the Unova series, especially compared to Cynthia, the strongest Champion until Leon arrived on the scene and one who's feats we've seen first-hand and someone who Iris idolised and considered above her. If Iris is to win, hopefully we get an episode full of development and maybe flashbacks of her previous feats such as when she defeated Alder, who is Champion level, if one of the weaker ones. It's unfortunate that her only battle had her losing to Ash's new pokemon so we have yet to see her true power that got her here.

That said, Cynthia definitely has the most chance of winning since it seems like the writers want to set up Ash vs Cynthia based on all the teasers we've had so far. The episode title does give Iris a shot though since it seems to be from her point of view. Regardless of who wins, hopefully this episode finally puts at rest the question of Iris's credentials as Champion.

I think by now people are too used to battles and "character development" in PM2019 not necessarily making too much sense to get particularly upset about whatever new nonsense they come up with, even if they think it's dumb.

Considering how Cynthia is easily the most popular character from the games, has an enormous fan base, and is still hyped by people because of her OP Garchomp... Yeah, the backlash would be tremendous, but not quite as bad as Ash vs Alain.

This would just be poor writing.
The Anime story revolves around Ash and the primary focus is about him reaching Leon.

Right before the Master Class qualification match, we see Ash Greninja effortlessly toy around with one of Ash's ace. Subsequently, in the master class tournament, we see Leon's Charizard effortlessly destroy Alain's Charizard, a pokemon Ash Greninja could never defeat. Plus, Alain's Charizard unlike AG, was busy taking part in the PWC versus cutting weed.

As of now, Ash simply doesn't have the credibility to come close to being any form of a threat to Leon, based on all of his performances so far. While the win against Steven would definitely help, it would be ideal for Ash to come across one more trainer of similar monstrous strength before the Leon fight, and the perfect person for this would be Cynthia given that she's ranked 2, the anime's most established regional champion with the longest standing relationship with the MC.

Iris beating or even coming close to Cynthia would just be terrible narratively simply because of her previous performance against Ash in the Great Class. If Iris effortlessly destroyed Ash in that battle, it would've been a different story. However, that didn't happen. In fact, the performance there was just so pathetic such that Pokemon's already inconsistent power scaling was completely thrown out of the door while having her lose against pokemon like Ash's Dracovish and Dragonite.

If they wanted to give Iris her moment, they should've matched her against Lance or Diantha. Matching her against the perfect semi-final candidate for Ash was a big mistake.

Ash definitely needs a high stake semi-final combined with the Steven match to make him ready for a fight against Leon (The strongest trainer in the world). Iris actually forcing Cynthia to go all out or even beating her would absolutely lower all the stakes and more importantly, take away any credibility of Ash being any real threat to Leon.

I think the perfect match would be Cynthia mostly mentoring Iris throughout the match and focusing on her growth since the last time they fought but more importantly, Iris realising there is still a lot of room to grow/great pinnacle of strength to reach for her to become the Dragon Master (And have the strongest Dragon owned Pokemon).
This can be established by Cynthia Mega Evolving Garchomp to reveal to Iris what her being serious or going all out is really like.

Now the only rational option to force Cynthia to get serious and go all out, would be to have Iris come in with a unique ace. Something like Zekrom/Reshiram or maybe even Mega Latias/Latios (Outside of Haxorus that lost against Ash previous) and have Cynthia defeat it in a serious fight.

Again I repeat, the anime is about Ash and not Iris. The former is the MC and the PWC arc should focus on him just like how the focus of Project Mew should be on Goh and not Gary.

I don’t think Iris is going to win otherwise they would not of had Ash take her on earlier in the series, the only reason they ever have Ash have a rematch with someone in the same series is because he lost to them previously. Now Lance and Leon could have a rematch, but after the battle against Alain, I really doubt that they care about the rematch since they probably won’t put too much effort into it.

Your first paragraph means that Ash beating Cynthia and Iris doing better against Cynthia than Alain against Leon (probably) won’t make any sense either

I think it might given that Cynthia is one of the strongest Champions ever. The only other Champions that are about as strong as her are Leon and Steven as their teams have multiple weaknesses and you really can’t sweep them using a single type or Pokémon.

Leon's dominance over Alain indicates how powerful Leon really is. As of now, from a plot perspective, there just isn't enough narrative to support Ash being a worthy enough challenger to Leon if they battle.

In order to accomplish this, having Ash battle and defeat the 3rd and 2nd strongest trainers is a great start. However, if Cynthia is overwhelmed by Iris, it would just weaken the plot based on Iris's previous performance against Ash when they battled.

Iris's growth from travel companion to a Regional Champion was questionable enough (However, given the connection with the games, this is understandable). That said, after her previous performance against Ash, objectively nobody think Iris is that much better than current Ash to be the obstacle he needs to overcome to defeat Leon.

So if she's able to force Cynthia to go all out, that completely lowers the stakes for Ash's semi-final fight and takes away any potential narrative support for Ash to be a worthy enough opponent for Leon.

Given that the whole thing about Leon is being unbeatable and him being worried of finding someone that can match his power, I think Ash at bare minimum is going to be his strongest challenger to date. Ash simply doesn't have enough feats atm to establish this narrativiely. Hence, the perfect opportunity to do this would be to have him beat Steven (A formidable champion) and then battle Cynthia who should be written to be very comparable to Leon.
