Gale of Darkness went in the opposite direction the series seemed to be heading with Colosseum. The drastically different design for the hero, the inclusion of childishly cute characters like Jovi and Chobin, the cartoonish animations of your defeated opponents, the simplified motives of the villians, the buffoonery of the Hexagon Brothers and even subtle changes like the increased size of character's heads in proportion to their body all suggest that someone - probalby Nintendo - felt that Genius Sonority missed the mark with Colosseum. Since Colosseum failed to draw a new teen and older crowd into the Pokemon universe as well as expected, Genius Sonority developed Gale of Darkness with the intention of making the game directly appeal to a younger audience. This move alienated some of the older Colosseum fans, who felt that its sequel should have continued the tradition of making Pokemon more grown-up. This sentiment is the primary reason for people not liking Gale of Darkness. The game, however, is still fun to play, even if you - like myself - don't find the story to be as interesting as Colosseum. Gale of Darkness provides a larger, richer environment to explore, a larger variety of Pokemon to snag, interesting mini-games, tighter controls in the overworld and vastly improved graphics over Colosseum. It is not a bad game. I would have preferred the game be more similar to Colosseum, storywise, but the game is enjoyable and engaging. It's the only Pokemon game I've played through only once, but I intend to remedy that. As for personal opinions, there are always going to be people who just don't like something and you just have to decide for yourself if you agree with their opinions, rather than giving their words dominion over your own views. I've already said more than I meant to, so I'll end on that note.
