Your Experience with Cars

Know all about your first driving trip? Any notable accidents? Funny, or weird things happen in front of you? This thread is about your unique experience with the automobile. Maybe even some tips when beginning out on the road. This is not the place to talk about cars in general, ex: Have you seen them Roadsters?

I have yet to get my licence or permit. I would like to get as a 16th birthday present. >.> But, my dad let me drive my mom's 2000 Ford Taurus about a week ago. I did pretty good, but since I'm used to Mario Kart and Need for Speed, I didn't know how many times you have to rotate the wheel. Haha. Same with the sensitivity of the gas pedal.

Yeah word of advice for everyone.

Do not think that just because you are good driver in Video game it will be the same in the real world.

Anyway I just to book driving test but I got a bit of a problem since my driving teacher as gone AWOL.

Me and my brother often go on road trips. On one, we parked outside McDonalds and got food inside. Whilst he went back to chuck away the rubbish, I put 8 packets of ketchup under the front tyres. He went over them and all you could here was this "Splut-pfffttttt" noise. The smell of tomato ketchup hung on his car for weeks.
Once, he also stuck a gummy bear to the windscreen and we waited to see how long it would last- it got about 11 miles before it fell off whilst we were waiting in traffic.

Don't know if this counts, but whilst I was driving my moped, as I was turning right a car overtook me. Never been so pissed off.

I know that. That was all I had as a driving games. It was 15 years of video games vs. 20 minutes of actual. Felt different.

I ride in my dad's car most of the time whenever we go to the library, stores, and relative's house, even though we could probably just walk there. It's funny because right now, I can't remember the last time I've been in a car (I've stayed home a lot for these past few weeks). Every week, my parents go shopping, but recently, I've never felt like it. :\

Almost every summer, I go on trips across the United States. We always had tons of supplies stored in the back of our van. I've always liked sightseeing and going to rest stops to buy snacks we didn't need. I've never been able to stay awake for a whole night while we drove (of course, my dad did). I've always liked traveling at night for some reason; maybe it's the lights. I can't wait to go traveling in two months, but we're still not sure where to go next.

I remember one time when we were suddenly caught in a hail storm while finding the next hotel. Naturally, my dad was worried about the car and everything, but it was an exciting experience for me. All I remembered was that many other cars parked under bridges to avoid those accidents. Another time, we were driving back home, and we parked at a gas station. My dad suddenly noticed that the van had a hole in a tire. I don't remember what we did for it, but we still got home safely.. There were times where we hear of a large storm coming our way, and we tried getting away from it as fast as possible. Too bad for me, since I like storms, even though they can be quite dangerous :p.

My parents got hit by an 18 wheeler for Michael Waltrip's NASCAR car.

It was in the same Taurus I drove in. it was T-Boned for about 500 feet before the guy even noticed, Luckily, it was raining, so the car kind of hydroplaned over the water. I would have been an orphan. The only injury to my parents was cuts from the glass, and sunburn from the radiator of the rig.

So, that's why we only have Fords now. Haha.

I got my license last January and only three months after getting it does my car break down. I was walking everywhere for a long time. Then I had three months of freedom. Now i'm back to walking again and borrowing my sister's car when able. I suppose its my destiny to roam the streets.

I'm beginning to think the requirements to get your driver's license in Utah must be more lax than other states, because, holy crap I've had a ton of near misses, and I'm not the only one. I consider the fact that I've only been in 2 accidents (well, 3 if you count the time I backed into a lamppost years ago.) in 5 years a miracle. People cut you off, don't bother signaling, don't let you merge, and do just about every other stupid thing you can do behind the wheel. SLC freeways are not fun.

^ And I thought Arizona has bad drivers o_o.

I'm currently studying to get my permit (yeah, I'm late, so what), and it hasn't been until the last year or two that I started paying attention to the roads and how everything works. So I don't really have any interesting car experiences except that Mom and I got rear-ended about a year ago. It was a big jolt like our car suddenly turned into a rollercoaster car and it had trouble moving smoothly. Yeah, it luckily wasn't serious (the guy accidentally stepped on the gas instead of the brake, he said), but I did have a bit of a headache the following morning.

Well, ever since I have gotten my license, I had three blown out tires in the past three months and recently, my engine overheated while I was 50 miles away from home. Turns out that there is a coolant problem that it hopefully going to be fixed some time this week.

Other than that, my experience with my only car has been very good as I truly do enjoy driving, even if it means paying about $4/gallon.

Conflicting choices
I've driven an automatic in our backyard a few times almost hitting a tree in the process, changed a few tires and am learning about the engine. I can't wait to get my learners, I reckon I might have a tough time though.

Marchin' on
Well, I've taken a lot of family road trips in my day. I once went on a 10-day trip through the western US with my parents and three cousins (hectic, but fun). My family also drove over 20 hours to Seattle one time to attend the Pokemon Rocks America event back in 2004.

I've also had some good and bad experiences with cab drivers around the world. Most of them have been very friendly and relatively safe, but let's just say I felt safer in the cabs in New York City than I did in Australia and Vancouver (Canada). And one of the cab drivers in London was the worst I've ever had (safety-wise, as well as refusing to say one word to my family and I the entire time just because we were American).

TM87? I got TM32 :]
Well I'm 14 so obviously don't have a license... My family doesn't use the car unless we're going somewhere that takes ages to get to -- We usually cycle everywhere.

I mourn the fact that cars are a necessity, but in the offhand and flighty way of imagining how much greater it would be if people had the ability to fly or teleport instead.

This is probably because much of my automobile experience has involved hardship or dissatisfaction. My immediate family, in the time I've been alive, has never owned a new car; indeed never even simply a car that had nothing wrong with it. Actually, only one branch of my extended family - an aunt and her husband/kids - has ever owned new or fully operational vehicles. Saving up for my own car (if not new then at least in good working condition) is a task to begin with, but I'll also have to face the added unfair insurance expense that comes with my age and gender. A great deal of my ire with the entire car environment has to do with the related bureaucracies of insurance, licensing and technical fees, and traffic violation law.

And again, in my experience, the darn things just don't keep well. If there isn't something wrong with the tires, it's the trunk latch, or the windshield, or the various guages and displays, or the doors, or the brakes, or the fanbelt/battery/spark plugs/other doohickeys under the hood, or the seatbelts, or the signaling lights, or the heating/AC system, or the locks and security system, or the radio, or any number of other frustrating and unexpected malfunctions. No sooner do I get the current problem properly fixed than another one or two problems crop up. Despite concerted efforts at responsible and conscientious maintenance and operation, every vehicle I come to rely on seems to harbor no greater wish than to become useless immediately and dangerously. It's enough to make a fella want to give up.

This is basically what everyone has in mind about car. I especially agree with you about the legal troubles about owning a car. Even if you do everything correctly, whether is not breaking any traffic laws, you can expect the sirens to go off on you the moment you get caught violating a minor law. Even if you take car of your car properly, expect your car to break down at the worst possible time.

I really can't wait of the invention of flying cars and teleportation. Heck, I don't even mind if we somehow get cars into their current forms but don't have to worry about unexpected problems.
