My favorite trainer is the anime is definitely Kenta. He plays by his one rules. First off, he's from my favorite region, Johto. Second, he just owns. Third, he has a Typhlosion.
How does Kenta play by his own rules? You mean he goes into a lot of trainer to trainer battles and therefore with his aggression, states his rules in the battle where the opponent generally accepts? Those conditions appear concise as well, being 1 or 2 pokemon only, though that isn't "play by own rules". Those are merely agreed terms on how much pokemon they are going to use. Unlike Satoshi, he doesn't have a neutral person with him to be able to referee, so he uses his aggressive confident nature to set up the rules. It's a simple rule (one pokemon each sounds simple), so it's easy to comply with by using your top pokemon.
Apparently Marina contains the same concept because she overrided Kenta. When you have only two people in a battle, someone has to set up the rules.

Kenta agreed to her rules anyways.
Satoshi isn't seen with this characteristic because he doesn't have many trainer to trainer battles randomly on the field, despite meeting a plethora of different people/trainers/breeders/orienteers/rangers/scientists/florists/etc. The only time Satoshi really went to trainers to battle was the episode that he got bulldozed by Kanna. And yet that episode most of the people declined the battles, haha. In other words, you don't see this fashion of battling from Satoshi at all.
The thing is, usually the challenged sets up the rules (example: gym leaders), or there is preset rules.
Actually I don't know. <_<
My favourite trainer is Kenta too.
