Zing Zap Togedemaru! (949)

Plus Ultra!
I don't get this whole "Ash is getting hurt too much" or "Ash is an idiot" complain. He is 10 years old, of course he would fail washing his clothes and cooking food, especially since he was very over-reliant on his past companions when it came to these stuff. All of the ways he got "hurt" was either out of his control or unrealistic to believe it was avoidable. If XY Ash was put into the same situation, then he wouldn't do much better, and yet I bet nobody would bat an eye if it happened to him. I guess after all the stars aligning for him in XY, the law of large numbers is starting to kick in and Ash is experiencing all the misfortune now.

Yes it is indeed a female.

Well, I guess I can let this slide. It's that ASH is the only one getting hurt in these episodes lately. Then again, with the episode focusing around him housesitting, I shouldn't be surprised. It was a fun episode, but kinda bland since there weren't that many characters.

Meh, I guess.

Even with how much of a snoozefest this episode was, I just loved the expressions by the characters. Especially at the beginning, I got a few good chuckles from Ash's face. Seeing Pikachu and Togedemaru together was also really cute.

The beginning of the episode was the highlight for me. The expressions on the characters' faces were absolute gold. You could really feel Ash's sense of dread as he was about to take that first bite of his...culinary concoction. You could tell he was kind of annoyed with Rotomdex telling him he couldn't eat the roll of meat and insisting that he cook instead.

But best of all were Pikachu's expressions. The "OMG I'm gonna die" look on his face when he was about to eat Ash's cooking just cracked me up. Ikue Ohtani's voice acting really shone in this episode, too.

WHAT

WHERE WAS THIS SAID

Does this give me an excuse to ship Pikachu and Togedemarun now...?

It was at the end of the episode, when Togedemaru was nuzzling Pikachu. Ash said Pikachu and Togedemaru had become a good combination, and Sophocles said, "But Togedemaru is a girl." It made me chuckle that Ash didn't seem the least bit fazed. He just said, "A girl? They're still a good combination" (or something along those lines).

I agree. The "butt monkey victim" moments were totally understandable and even a little expected. I wouldn't be surprised if Ash has never used a washing machine before. Overfilling the machine is an understandable, and rather realistic, mistake. We all know he is a horrible cook. Even he knows he is a horrible cook; Rotomdex insisted he cook, anyway. His speeding around a corner and running into a steel door is totally in character for him, and it's something he would have done in any other series, including XY(&Z). This was all Ash being Ash.

Is no one going to give the boy credit for reaching under the closing door to pull Sophocles through? It's pretty clear that was a feat of strength, given how heavy Sophocles apparently is. Ash is still the heroic Ash people love, even when the universe is kicking him in the hindquarters.

Ash isn't being the heroic Ash anymore like XY, very sadly. He seems to be always acting like an idiot, like Nobita from Doraemon.

I'm surprised more people didn't make note of how ash had a gen 1 surf sprite t shirt on.

Also i liked the beginning of the episode. Felt very realistic with ash dealing with cooking and laundry because he never did those things on his own before. And it shows that even though he can be some cool action hero from time to time and save the world, he's still just a ten year old kid.

Also I'm glad that they knew the "ash running into the wall" thing got old when it did and had ash stop himself before hitting it.

I respectfully disagree. IMHO, Ash is acting like an overexcited young boy - which is exactly what he is and always has been. Sure, he may seem more excited than usual, but this new land and new adventure is still fresh to him. He doesn't need to leap off a building in order to be heroic. He rushed into battle to aid Kiawe against Team Skull, without knowing anything about his opponents or their Pokémon. He (and Pikachu) created a diversion so Rowlet could rescue its Pikipek family from Team Rocket.

Besides, Ash is a bit of an idiot - or, at least, naïve when it comes to anything outside of a Pokémon battle. Really, the only idiotic thing he did in this episode was blindly run around corners without checking to make sure there wasn't a steel door in his way.

I think it's still too early in the series to completely write off Ash as non-heroic.

I didn't mention this before, but I liked that Sophocles seemed reluctant to admit he was at the mall to get ice cream, and that he seemed really happy that Ash enjoyed the ice cream. It makes me wonder if the other students tease him for wanting sweets due to his weight. It was a nice, yet subtle, moment. I also find it interesting that he is afraid of the dark - even though he denied it. It's cute that Togedemaru acts as a nightlight for him.

Ash wasn't so idiotic in the entire Anime except the OS. This is pretty much seeming like the OS all over again. I am just hoping that things change as the series progresses.

OS Ash was 10x funnier than S&M Ash

Maybe but he at least wasn't so funny in looks. After the OS, the Pokemon Anime, reduced the slapstick, which is right for an adventure show, but this series, as we saw in this episode, is overdoing the slapstick.

This episode is good not great. It humored me enough to like it. It was consistent with how they portray Ash outside his pokemon journey, inept at housework like cooking. I like he now has a wardrobe outside of his official design. Yes, the slapstick was a bit excessive at times, but it was enjoyable.

That's because OS Ash was dubbed by 4Kids who did decent job in editing and RL references to make sure English watchers got funny part.. Watch OS sub and witness that OS's comedy isn't that great.

I felt like this episode was supposed to be the episode where we get to know Sophocles better and yet i feel like we barely know anything about him other than the fact that he is a clumsy and unfit inventor who's also a electric type specialist, just like Clemont.

Also, the Bewear gag can be funny sometimes, but this time it just interrupted the action and didn't give the battle a conclusion. It was anticlimatic and stopped Sophocles from being the one who saves the day and not Bewear. I wish they had chosen another gag, the blasting off again at least happened usually after Team Rocket lost.

By the way, Pikachu get your sh*** together. I get it, you go through a reset at the beginning of every saga, but at least put up a fight first before getting rekt by Mimikyu. It's getting ridiculous how much of a pushover you're being.

Anyway, despite thinking that the episode was unoriginal and that it didn't have any type of character development or plot advancement, i enjoyed seeing Rowlet being cute. Therefore, i give this episode a 3/5.

They should just give us 20 minutes of Rowlet being cute, i'm sure the saga would be a success if they did that.

Again, I respectfully disagree. Ash isn't really being an idiot. He is being a kid. Overfilling the washing machine isn't being an idiot; it's making a mistake due to ignorance. Ash can't cook, so the fact that he failed at cooking is not being an idiot, especially since he only cooked at Rotomdex's insistence.

One could argue leaping off the loft railing and face-planting into the fish tank was rather stupid, but Ash is very nimble and used to leaping off things and landing safely. It was also in character with him acting before thinking.

I failed to see how is saving Togademaru losing a fight and a reset.

Also because he was a snarky little brat who was arrogant and was constantly chatting **** to Misty and Brock. S&M humour is just Ash being thrown around like an idiot.

Don't get me wrong though, 4kids was what made OS so great.

Well, but he is being used as an object to show the slapstick, this shouldn't happen in my opinion. Ash should at least retain some maturity and dignity, I think that is essential for an adventure show like Pokemon.

Adventure shows like My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic has all the main characters undergo slapstick. I fail to see why slapstick reduces their dignity. Ash not knowing how to do laundry is also consistent with what his shown in the series. Gone Corphishin' showed May did laundry while Volcanion and the Mechanical Marvel showed Serena doing his laundry. Ash has been shown to make terrible food, seeing how his poffins always turn out fowl.

This episode sum up my main issue with this series right now while nothing really bad about, it just kinda boring and with no real no real plot or character progression to speak of.

But Pokemon has been a show with some serious action mainly, except the OS. There has been comedy relief, but not much like the OS and SM so far. What happened in this episode was really poor in my opinion, I want the plot to get serious.

It was like 90% to Misty. What made OS Ash funny( in dub) is funny fights between Ash and Misty. Ash using puns and references.
Now, watch that in sub , only Ash and Misty fight would be funny, while puns and references only apply to Japanese watchers.
Same with Samson Oak's puns. So if we compare from their original shoes; I think it'd be a tie in comedy. But in 'dub' shoes: 4Kids' comedy tops any Japanese and TPCI comedy, IMO.
