Breeding Question

When I go to breed two different pokemon, you obviously need one male and one female with a common egg group. Now, say if I want a Maril egg, the pokemon that MUST be female has to be a Maril? Or can the Maril be male and still get a maril egg? Thanks.

Ditto has no gender.....

Other than Ditto + male Marill, You have to have a Female with the Sea Incense item on her.
