connection problems

i have been having a problem doing battles with fire-red and emerald. what needs to be done on both. but i think the main problem is i have a gameboy color cord. does that not work?

u have to defeat steven on emerald... and on fire red, you need to get the ruby and the sapphire..... then you can trade with them... if you have done those things, you must get a new cable....
