Corrupted?

Axel

Everytime I boot up my Windows XP, I log in like normal. But then it says that something's corrupted (don't remember what, I haven't touched my computer since it happened.). It says to run ChkDisk utility, but how do I do that?

And I'm having a problem with something called Winfixer. I keep getting Winfixer pop ups. How should I get them to stop? I know that Winfixer's is a virus or something, but those pop ups are so darn annoying and caused my comp to crash a few times.

Any help is appreciated.

Winfixer is spyware... you can remove it by using adaware.

with the corrupt files program, to check your disk, type chkdsk C: /f in the command prompt. Say yes when it says to schedule a scan at reboot. Reboot your computer to have the scan activated.

Well, I just wanna go with reformatting my PC. My mom would probably insist on using the safe mode and trying to fix it, but she doesn't know a thing about it. I already got most of what I needed on my dad's computer. So how would I reformat?

My PC isn't prebuilt I think. I don't really know since it's almost 10 or so years old and I was maybe 4 when we got it. I think I have an installation disc, what are the next steps?

It was running XP fine until just recently. It was 2000 that I had problems with, because it made my comp crash all the time. 1998 was kind of slow, but XP was pretty good so far.

Does System Restore go back several months? I got Winfixer at least 1 month ago. Maybe going on two.

If at most I can go back a week, I won't be able to use it then.

How much does a relatively good computer cost? I think if I save up my money, my parents will let me buy another one. Would it be around $500 or more?

At least $600 for one that can play games at an acceptable rate. You should look for ones with the following:

AMD Athlon 64 3500+
1024MB or 1GB PC3200 RAM
160GB hard drive (or more)

That is what I suggest for gaming. Unless you build, you're going to be stuck with an ATI Radeon Xpress 200 graphics card though.

The $300-$450 PC's, the ones with the Celerons and Semprons... those are good enough for emulation and games from, I'd say, 2003 and before.

That is one with a intergrated graphics one, right?...

Performance computer might start out with 700 dollars or more including a graphics card, optical drives, ram, hard drive, and a fast processor.

Intergrated Graphics in my option is not good for gaming at all. It's really meant for office applications and internet use. A Radeon x800 or a Geforce 6800 is enough to get good performance...

Mine cost arround 1300 including a monitor... but that was 2004, I think it's a bit cheaper now. ^_^

Well, current games with intel intergrated graphics is horrible. although it might be cheap for gaming, the performance is horrible with intel graphics card... even with modern games. I tested a computer with intel intergrated graphics with 3D mark and the score went low.... or no score at all...

Thank you for the help everyone. My stepdad installed Norton Antivirus 2003. But is Norton a good antivirus program?

And a second question, Norton got rid of all 7 Trojans on my computer, but is there still a chance that Winfixer will still pop up occasionally?

I looked and I didn't see anything in the processes called nail.exe. So does that mean my computer will be ok for a while?

I'm surprised that it came out ok. Do you think it'd be a good idea to download some programs like Ad-aware? Or would Norton do a good job with that stuff?

Getting Ad-aware can only be good. The wider variety of programs you have for specific jobs, the more likely it is you'll get a cleaner system. For example, I have one antivirus program, and then about 4 ad- and spy-removers (Ad-aware, Spybot, ...), so I don't rely on the antivirus to get rid of spyware (which it wasn't specifically designed to remove, although it's not bad at getting rid of some of it). I do a full system scan every Saturday morning with everyting I've got, and I almost always find something (at least a tracking cookie or an unneeded registry entry).
