Return?

This isn't an asnwer to your question, but it does concern the move Return.

In Collosseum, is there any way of telling how happy your PKMN is?

The Pokemon will have the same Affection toward you in the Link Battle as it has in game. In essence, yes, Return is a good competitive move.

I don't remember any way to check Affection in Colosseum. I could be wrong, but I don't think there is one.

it's not an exact indicator of the pokemon's happiness but it's pretty close: when a pokemon uses the move, the more hearts that appear then the higher the pokemon's happiness

What's the maximum amount of hearts for Return? 4 or 5?

i'm pretty sure it's just 4. three of my pokemon across the 2 games know it, all of which have been in my party long enough to have maxed out their happiness, and i've never seen a return attack with 5 hearts. i guess could be mistaken though *shrugs*
