Minecraft is a block-building sandbox game developed by Markus Persson (aka "Notch"). The game consists of "Classic" and "Alpha" mode. In Classic, you can use blocks to build houses, fortresses, bridges; whatever your heart desires. There's also a multiplayer mode to build with other users.
If you bought the game (it's currently €9.95, about $13 USD), you'll gain access to Alpha. The goal: survival! You are stranded in the middle of nowhere and you need to survive (obviously). Cut trees to get wood, which is used for a variety of tools. In the day, sheep and pigs will spawn, which can also be used for food and cloth. However, when night falls, evil monsters appear. Build huge castles and underground system to protect yourself from these monsters and dominate the forsaken land of creepers, spiders, zombies and skeletons! Alpha generates infinte maps, so you can explore forever.
To keep content fresh, Notch has a secret update on Fridays. He works full-time on the game, and he's gotten recognition by developers like Valve and Infinity Ward. The game is approaching beta (along with the release of multiplayer Survival), and the price will go up when it does. Paying for it now is like pre-ordering the game and getting to play it.
