*cough* Dawn was better at that without needing a crush, I mean she evn cheered for him, Serena just...stood there

BTW: Trying to argue with 345-greninjash is as productive as trying to get an adult silverback gorilla to swim

I don't think I can completely agree to this either. I feel like certain episodes like the episode where she races her mom showed some of her best qualities and some great development for her character and are among the best episodes of XY imo. I feel like if we got more of these kinds of episodes especially early on that she would have been a better established character.

    Fixed it for you.

Iris calling Ash a kid was pretty much to emphasize the fact that Ash was immature and a little kid, but well....She herself was the same.

I'm not sure what you mean here, but I just provided a counter argument to that part where you said that Serena couldn't accept Ash's flawed side.
Props to Dawn for her cheerleading, but Serena also cheered for Ash- watch her comments during the Ash vs Sawyer and Ash vs Alain battle. She also blushed after Ash defeated Sawyer at the League.

Fine. Can't counter my arguement, so resorting to brash accusations.

It is no doubt that Serena liked and cared for Ash but she didn't like & care for him more than what his other friends have. Like I said, if Iris and Ash hated each other, they wouldn't be traveling, much less MISS each other. The episode where they decided to go their own way, there were feelings on both end and Ash even "gasp" called Iris cute when she put a flower in her hair and gave her a bad apple when he was trying to apologize earlier. You surely can't forget their dinner date together.

There's a saga amount of evidence that they both like each other. :D And yes, Iris is a hypocrite but that was the point in calling Ash a kid. She was no different nor better than him, which is common in well... kids.

That's not what DankOverlord (and most of us) meant.

What we mean is, years from now, Iris and Serena won't be remembered for their character, development, and goal progression, but something shallow as their treatment towards Ash.

Like PokeGirl Fan~ said, Serena will be remembered as "Ash's waifu" who had this huge crush on him and looked at him like her "knight in shining armor", rather than a strong, independent girl who defied her mom's expectations to be a Rhyhorn racer and forged her own path with her career as a Performer. The same goes for Iris, who won't be remembered as a strong-willed, feisty, and wild girl who had an interesting backstory, remained loyal to her Pokemon despite her disobedience, tamed wild Dragon-type Pokemon, and dared to challenge Dragon-type specialists above her level, but rather as a "hypocrite" who "bullied" Ash by calling him a kid.

It shows how superficial and shallow this fandom is when they think of these two girls.

And as I said before, Iris was also called out for her childish antics, so she didn't get away with teasing Ash. Besides, like everyone said, Iris called Ash a kid out of harmless teasing for fun, not to insult his character. There are times when Iris cared for Ash as a friend. So what if she's a hypocrite? Why can't you interpret the fact that Iris' harmless teasing towards Ash is a sign of her friendship towards him?

    DankOverlord Komodo Dragons Rule!

Even Iris went out of her way to make sure Ash's gym battle with Roxie had Ash on his good side as well as motivated (AKA a fricking rock band cheering for Ash).

That alone overshadows any comment from Serena LOL
  7. 345ash-greninja

Their attitude towards Ash is obviously going to have an effect on the fandom- because they were quite unique. One despised Ash through her annoying catchphrase, and one idolized and admired Ash very much. Different people of the fandom are going to take this differently through their POV. They obviously had other characteristics other than their attitude towards Ash, but their uniqueness in that attitude is what attracts the major attention of the fandom.

Same as above. The fandom isn't shallow, it's their unique attitude towards Ash which attracts most of the attention.

Even if it's harmless teasing, the hypocrisy in her teasing bugged me the most. Teasing in other way wouldn't have mattered to me that much to be honest.

And Serena always showed a strong belief during Ash's battles that 'Ash will definitely win', or that 'Ash can handle this', this showed how much she believed in Ash and his abilities. Her cute blush after Ash defeated Sawyer means something you know! :D

*sigh* And you go again with it , she doesn't despises Ash she seems him as a friend and her catchphrase is just harmless teasing, If Ash was emotionally hurt by it he would've made it clear to her, you're at this point too desesperate to keep repeating your words over and over again to ind excuses to hate Iris for something so petty
, while praising Serena because "ship, ship, tease, and true love"

    Lord Trollbias Y'all Salty Bishes

You can be a kid and still have the awareness to call another kid a kid. Nothing hypocritical about it. Hypocritical would be Iris denying she's a kid if accused of being one, which she hasn't done.
Not to mention its a bloody childish catchphrase FFS. I swear some of y'all must never had friedns as kids because kids teasing other kids happened all the time at that age. Hell it still happens now with me and my friends and I'm 20.

I really wished the anime would have given her such a goal. This would have made her so much more unique. But for some reason the anime just do not want to have such types of girls in it's show. All of them just have to be the typical girl girls all over again. I don't get it. Has this soemhting to do with some sort of Japanese cultural thing?

And there you go again, not countering my arguement and making brash accusations. If you bothered to read my full post, you could have realized that her teasing didn't bug me that much, the hypocrisy in her teasing did.

And regarding Serena, I have given my arguements above why her admiration, care and love for Ash was 'true' and not adulterated.

It's pointless to try and convince 345-greninjash of accepting the truth and realizing he's biased AF

You literally said she despised him which is far from the truth, adn I did give arguments but you're too stubborn to even lsiten to anything that isn't agreeing with you, and Serena's admration and care is as big and notable as Dawn's , Iris', May's , Misty's, the difference here is a one sided crush that went nowhere. That's it , remove that and Serena is May 2.0 with a little bit of Plot Armor

Why is it that we always have to judge a character based on their relationship towards Ash? He's not the thread that holds everything together.

Iris-Cilan interaction was frankly pretty good. I liked the science vs magic dynamic that went on. If this banter continued, then we would like Iris more. Considering her knowledge of Unova lore, her goal could have been used to explore the myths of the Tao Trio rather than use Cedric Juniper.
  14. 345ash-greninja

    345ash-greninja Royal Guard Knight

I didn't find any good arguements you gave. Which one?

Ok, even if I change the word 'despised' and use the word 'teased', that doesn't change the Iris was a kid herself and so her catchphrase felt kinda annoying and hypocritical, and I don't think that I'm the only one who thinks that way.

And every travelling companions of Ash cared for him. That's natural. But Serena did care for Ash some extra bit. Whenever Ash is having trouble during a battle or so(like in the first Gym battle with Wulfric), Serena looks a bit extra concerned, and she also believes in Ash an extra bit. When Wulfric Mega Evolves his Abomasnow(during the rematch), doesn't Serena say, 'It's OK, Ash can handle this', or in the Ash vs Sawyer battle in the rematch, when Ash-Greninja was busy dodging the Frenzy Plants from Mega Sceptile, didn't Serena say, 'Don't worry, Ash is one with Greninja right now, they won't give up until they have given it their all, or during Ash-Greninja vs Mega Charizard X in the finals, didn't Serena say, 'It OK, Ash will definitely win''. See, she always showed some extra belief and concern for Ash compared to the other Pokegirls. This just shows her love for Ash clearly. So no, Serena isn't a May with plot-armor like you said.

Are we just gonna ignore their relationship shown throughout the saga? Iris was a lot more hands on than Serena both physically and emotionally. They trained together, did a ton of activities together (tennis, dress up, Club battles, acting, swinging vines, saving Pokémon & their skins), ate together, shared each other thoughts... basically what friends do. Friendship doesn't consist of always agreeing, never fighting, and living in some type of utopian "perfect" relationship. That's just... unrealistic as there will always be one thing that ticks you off about that person.
He's actually a big fan of Iris. I hope he backs up why he thinks Iris hates Ash just because she, a kid, is calling Ash, a kid, a kid.

    Frozocrone Miraculous!

That's like Dawn putting on a show when Ash lost to Paul though.

Also why the f*** are we talking about other girls in this thread about Iris?

Frankly I agree with Xeogran or whoever said they didn't care what the fanbase thinks, Iris was cool to me and that's all that matters.

I actually wished they interacted way more with each other. The best interactions are always the ones where the characters are the complete opposite of each others.

U.N. Owen In Brightest Day, In Blackest Night ...

Seriously, if we need to talk about other girls than Iris, we can take it to the Controversial Opinions thread shameless plug. I personally don't see how Iris's character benefits from being compared to other girls.
  19. TheWanderingMist

TheWanderingMist Kanae, Keeper of the Gates Emblazoned

You can't talk about her without comparing her to the others though. May got compared to Misty, Dawn to May, Iris to Dawn, and so on. Since they all share the same role (PokeGirl), comparisons are going to be made and opinions on who was better are going to pop up by default.

    Don't fight about Pokégirls.

Plus, this show doesn't care that much about them. They delete them and replace them at every generation, they forget about them and wait for the target audience to do likewise.
