Mega Evolution - Speculation/Discussion Thread

Also Mega Eelektross and Mega Manectic share the same typing. Really glad they gave Mega Ampharos dragon type as it easily could have been pure electric as well.
At least with them it’s not as bad as Raichu since, unlike the other Mega Electric types, Raichu has two Mega forms

I honestly don’t understand why they made both Mega Raichus pure Electric type, and yet when it came to Charizard & Mewtwo they had one Mega Evolution that kept their original tying while the other Mega Evolution changed or gained a type.

They could have easily made Mega Raichu X Electric/Fighting or Mega Raichu Y Electric/Psychic with the other Mega Raichu keeping the pure Electric typing.

In all honesty of hurts the marketability of both Mega Raichus to be the exact same type as each other without at least one of them gaining a 2nd type.

Plus from a practical perspective it means that they provide less utility coverage for type specialists. If one of the megas had Fighting or Psychic typing then it could be the mega of a fighting/Psychic specialist. (Though admittedly if it had been a psychic one I'd have given that to an Alolan Raichu). Mega Charizard x gaining dragon type meant it has been used by dragon specialists like Lance in lets go which was quite useful. Less of a problem for Zeraora as that's mythical so I don't expect it will commonly be used (similar to Diancie) exluding games like Pokemon masters where the rules are different but one of the Raichus easily could have been if it had another type.

True and with Eelektross if it keep levitate when it gets an ability makes sense to keep it that type as it means it maintains its lack of weaknesses and Manectric being pure electric made sense as it was the only pure electric mega at that point (so less notable). The fact that 4 of the megas sharing the same single type only are from the same game and its DLC seems like odd planning to me. Don't get me wrong though I am glad electric has more options.

I guess anyone who likes Zeraora will like this, since it's pretty similar.

As for me, I always thought Zeraora has the worst Pokémon design to date, so I absolutely couldn't care for this Mega.
I remember an interesting theory of Zeraora being an Ash and Pikachu fusion...

BTW Alola Mythicals are treated well:
Marshadow has its unique Z-move
Zeraora has a Mega
Melmetal a G-Max
Mageanra has 2 forms...for now

There is actually some random lore from a movie tie-in manga (at least according to bulbapedia) to explain its origin.
It is explained that Zeraora was supposedly born from an explosion caused by a bolt of lightning striking an erupting volcano. Though who knows if that is true outside of that manga. Zeraora is remarkably low on lore despite being the major character in a movie and this is so far what it has. Hopefully its mega helps expand it lorewise

The alola mythicals have been treated well I just would have liked Marshadow to be easier to get. Hopefully it'll get a giveaway soon (even if it doesn't get a mega but a mega would also be cool).

Technically Melmetal is not considered to be Alola mythical. It's listed as being from an "Unknown Origins" or "Unidentified". Even though they could have made it from Alola, Kanto or Galar.

Mega Zeraora sure is a Mega. Curious if the Luxray color scheme was unintentional. But his original colors were already black, yellow and blue to begin with.

My guess is it's unintentional, but considering multiple mega evolutions involve taking on traits of their pre-evolutions or similar I'd be ok if they were going to imply that Zeraora was originally a member of the Luxray line that got changed by something and made a lot stronger (which would change its established lore but considering that's only mentioned in one movie tie-in manga they could do that) and thus the mega Zeraora gets some of its luxray traits back. But for the moment I assume they just picked colours they though suited it.

I've always been ambivalent on Zeraora. The design is cool, but the lack of any story to it in the games made it boring to me and it's one of the Mythicals I don't pay much attention to. The Mega doesn't seem like it'll change that as the design changes feel too minimal to me, maybe the event will make it more interesting, but considering neither Diancie or Xerneas/Yveltal improved on that front I'm not counting on it.

Mega Lucario Z doesn't need that weird loop around its ears and nose

looks cool otherwise

Yeah that is a bit of a curious design choice. Otherwise I like the rest of it.

Main thing I'll be curious to see is how this things stats will work. Given that apparently Z Mega Evolutions have a shorter Charge Time for moves from ordering to firing, but they use more of the move gauge they seem to be really changing things up. Plus considering how the trailer showed Mega Lucario being knocked out and mega Lucario-Z being completely fine I wonder if it will gain more than 100 stat points.

Apparently Lucario -Z's getting a boost in the defensive stats which is a big deal considering how frail Lucario normally is.

Interesting. Especially as Z-Megas burn through their mega energy a lot quicker and thus won't be on the field for as long. Though that's how it seems to work in Z-A, I have no idea how they will translate that to Pokemon champions.

Either it is a mechanic exclusive to Z-A or Z Megas function in a similar manner to Dynamax (automatically wearing off after a certain number of turns).
